The R.A. Butler Prize for essays in Politics and International Studies is a competition that can be entered by students in Year 12 or the Lower 6th. Candidates are invited to submit an essay on a topic to be chosen from a list of general questions announced in March each year, and to be submitted in August.

The Prize is jointly organised by Trinity College Cambridge and Cambridge University’s Department of Politics and International Studies. The Prize was established in memory of the former Master of Trinity College, Lord Butler, who most famously served as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer, and who was responsible for the introduction of free secondary education for all students in the UK.

The objectives of the R.A. Butler Prize are twofold. Firstly, it aims to encourage students with an interest in modern politics and world affairs to think about undertaking university studies in Politics, International Studies or a related discipline; it is not limited to those already studying these subjects or indeed other social sciences. Secondly, its intention is to recognise the achievements both of high-calibre students and of those who teach them.

The 2024 competition has closed.

Format:  Essays can be up to 3,000 words, including all footnotes and references but excluding the bibliography.  It’s worth considering the use of examples in your essays: the best essays often use a diverse selection of contemporary, historical or literary examples.  We encourage you to provide references to your sources of information, and to include a bibliography at the end of the essay.  There is no recommended referencing or bibliographic style – use whatever format you think works best.  Please include your name on the document and save the file as “Surname, First name”.

Eligibility:  The Prize is for students in Year 12 or Lower 6th at the time the questions are released in March.  Students based abroad are most welcome to participate. To be eligible, you must be in your penultimate year of school. That is, to be eligible for the 2024 competition, you should be expecting to receive your final school results in the year from September 2024 to August 2025. This condition is held to strictly and, to be fair to the participants, no exceptions are made.  Each entrant to the competition is allowed to submit only one essay.

Submissions:  Essays must be submitted by 12 noon (UK time) on Thursday 1 August 2024.  Please submit essays using the form below.

Prize: The competition carries a First Prize of £600, to be split equally between the candidate and his or her school or college (the school or college’s portion of the prize to be issued in the form of book tokens), and a Second Prize of £400, which again is to be shared equally between the candidate and his or her school or college.  We award on average 8 special commendations each year and 40 additional commendations. Winners and recipients of special commendations will be announced in September, and will be invited to visit the College to meet some of the teaching staff.

Contact:  Any queries from students who may be interested in submitting work for the prize, or their teachers, should be directed to Dr Glen Rangwala by email to:  [email protected] .

limit of 2500 words. 2022 brief: fitzwilliam college traces its origins to 1869, when the university of cambridge launched an initiative to facilitate access to higher education for the many students who could not afford the costs of college membership. the initiative was part of the broader transformation of education in britain, as the changes wrought by industrialisation and urbanisation created a need to cater for a growing, increasingly diverse and literate population. earlier decades had already witnessed the establishment of king’s college london, durham university, and the university of london, for instance, and colleges for women were beginning to open in cambridge and oxford. these radical social and economic changes were themselves connected to the intensification of globalisation in the second half of the nineteenth century, which placed britain at the heart of an ever-tighter web of economic relations between the world’s continents. but the same year also witnessed the birth of mohandas – later mahatma – gandhi, who would come to challenge britain’s colonial rule and lead india on the path to independence; the death of alphonse de lamartine, the poet and politician who had proudly proclaimed france’s second republic in 1848, but whose final years were lived under the more authoritarian second empire; the marriage of emperor meiji, which consolidated japan’s monarchy as the country began a new process of industrialisation; and the establishment by susan b. anthony and elizabeth cady stanton of the national woman suffrage association in a united states still recovering from the civil war. in 1869, as throughout history, old and new worlds collided. we invite applicants to examine, in their essays, a topic of their choice, connected to the changes taking place in or around the year 1869. essays may focus on a particular event, a person, a political movement, or even a process of social, economic or cultural change, but they should consider the interaction of ‘old’ and ‘new’ forces which the chosen topic illuminates. fitzwilliam college rosemary horrox medieval world essay competition this essay competition is for students in year 21 or equivalent; Success in Oxbridge essay competitions

E96A5104

Congratulations to our year 13 pupils who have been successful in various History essay competitions held by Cambridge and Oxford University.

Teddy E, James G & Zach F were all commended for essays submitted in the St Hugh’s College (Oxford) Julia Wood History Prize.

Cameron J was commended for an essay submitted for the Fitzwilliam College (Cambridge) Archaeology Prize & Charlie B was commended for an essay for the Trinity College (Cambridge) Robson Prize. Junayd S also got a highly commended for his essay for the Trinity College (Cambridge) Robson Prize essay.

Teddy spoke about the topic which interested him for the competition: “I wrote an essay regarding ‘to what extent was the Japanese invasion of China responsible for communist victory in the Chinese civil war’ which was very thought-provoking”.

Cameron commented: “My essay focused on the title ‘In what ways does the study of archaeology remain political’. I could use a lot of material I’d been given in Archaeology university challenge sessions with Mr Hern as sources for my essay which helped a lot in the planning stages, and he helped me a lot by giving me advice and criticisms on my essay before I submitted it for the competition. I’m hoping this achievement will help my application to Durham to do History and French”.

James G spoke about his experiences: “The research took about a week and a half, and the writing took two days. My essay was on the creation of a Greek national identity, specifically how this came to happen. It took theories of nationalism from 'Imagined Communities' (Anderson) and 'Sapiens' (Harari) and applied it to the Greek example, which used 'The Greeks' (Beaton) and various other primary and secondary sources”.

He added: “For anyone else doing it I would recommend thinking of a subject area and doing your research with a broad aim in mind, but as you set your own question with the Julia Wood essay prize, don't feel restricted to it. I changed my own title 2 days before the deadline to suit better what I had written. Don't feel limited by your own title”.

Well done to everyone from all at MGS!

Press Release

Nation’s longest running essay competition offers more than rm 200,000 bursaries and prizes.

Sunway Oxbridge Essay Competition 2021

Sunway Group’s highly anticipated Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition, which is the nation’s longest running English essay competition, is back for the ninth consecutive year with prizes worth up to RM200,000 in cash, bursaries, and Sunway PALS points to be won.

The Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition is the most popular of its kind in the country organised by Sunway Group, The Oxford and Cambridge Society Malaysia, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Sunway University, with support from Sunway PALS and fully endorsed by the Ministry of Education.

The competition aims to equip secondary-level students with skills such as English proficiency, critical reasoning, creativity, as well as emotional intelligence that will prepare them for their future.

The competition is open to all secondary school students studying the local syllabus and this year’s essays will revolve around the theme of ‘humility’. Participating students will be divided into Category A (Form 1 to 3 students) and Category B (Form 4 and 5 students).

Sunway Group Deputy Executive Chairman and Jeffrey Cheah Foundation trustee Tan Sri Datuk Seri Razman M. Hashim said, “This competition is part of the Group’s effort in nation-building to improve the quality of education across Malaysia by providing a fun and creative platform that allows them to develop a critical and innovative mindset, complete with the soft skills necessary for their future.

“We believe that we have a social responsibility to help advance the nation’s young minds for the betterment of our community,” he added.

This vision is encapsulated in the #SunwayforGood initiative that comprises three key pillars – education, healthcare and community enrichment. The Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition is an extension of that initiative and reflects the commitment Sunway has made to uphold the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.

As per previous years, students will be required to submit their winning entries through the official portal, www.sunway.com.my/essay , starting 28 March to 29 April 2022 (by 1.00 pm).

Students under Category A (Form 1 to 3) will need to write a 200 to 350-word essay. The essay prompt is: “Malaysia is a country with religious diversity. Discuss how mutual respect can help people from different religious beliefs coexist harmoniously.”

Meanwhile, students from Category B (Form 4 and 5) will need to submit a 500 to 650-word essay. The prompt is: “Malaysia is a multiracial country. Make an argument for a more inclusive school that values the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of its students and outline the benefits this would bring.”

Sunway Education Group Chief Executive Officer Professor Elizabeth Lee said, “We hope the topics we have chosen this year cultivate the art of critical thinking, a highly sought-after skill in graduates and prospective hires. Over and above this, we hope to instil a sense of pride for our country and unity among races in our students.

“The digital age in the wake of COVID-19 has somewhat confined physical communications and social integration opportunities to the backseat. We need to provide the space for discussions such as these to take place to ensure Malaysia continues to be the melting pot of Asia,” she added.

Since its inception in 2014, more than 22,000 students have participated in the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition, making it one of the most popular local literary contests.

Shortlisted participants in the first round will be invited to the on-site finals, an essay-writing assessment, on 23 July 2022 at Sunway Education Group institutions across Malaysia; Sunway University in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, Sunway College Ipoh, Sunway College Kuching and Sunway College, Johor Bahru.

Winners will be selected by a special panel of judges comprising representatives from the Ministry of Education, teachers from the Sunway Education Group Centre for English Language Studies (CELS) and Ms. Margaret Hall, Past President and Executive Committee Member of The Oxford and Cambridge Society.

The first prize consists of RM5,000 in cash, a Sunway bursary worth RM16,000, 10,000 Sunway PALS Points, an award certificate and a trophy.

The second prize – RM3,000 in cash, a Sunway bursary worth RM12,000, 10,000 Sunway PALS Points, an award certificate and a trophy.

St John's College Classics and Ancient History Essay Competition 2022/23

The St John’s College Classics and Ancient History Essay Competition will be running for the thirteenth time during the academic year 2022/23.

The competition is open to all students currently studying at a UK School or College, in Year 12 (Lower Sixth) or equivalent, whether or not they are currently studying a Classical or Ancient subject. Entrants will be invited to attend a Study Afternoon at St John’s College, Oxford on the 19th April 2023. We are able to cover travel expenses of all students eligible for free school meals or in care.

Each student may submit one essay (only) of up to 2,000 words on any of the following four questions: 1. Discuss the role of bad memories in ancient literature. 2. ‘So that human achievements may not become forgotten in time’ (Herodotus). Was Greek and/or Roman historical memory primarily about nostalgia for past achievements? 3. Did art and archaeology in the ancient world ever try to manipulate its viewers’ memories of historical events? 4. Sometimes we have false memories. So can we ever trust what we remember?

Prizes Awarded: A £100 book token will be awarded to the best essay in each category and an additional £75 book token to the overall winner. A further £75 book token will be awarded to the best essay submitted by a pupil who has not previously studied a Classical or Ancient subject. All applicants will receive a certificate of entry.

Aims and Guidelines: The competition gives students currently studying any subjects at a UK School or College, in Year 12 or equivalent, an opportunity to write an essay on the classical world. The organizers are interested in providing an occasion for independent research, to encourage curiosity and reflection in those who have studied the ancient world before and those who have not.

The essay titles have been chosen to take account of research interests of our tutors and to encourage the widest possible approach to investigation of the ancient world.

All primary texts can be considered in translation or in the original language. Where either primary or secondary sources have been used they should be acknowledged with full references given.

All essays should:  Be word-processed with double-spaced lines, and saved in a PDF format.  Include ONLY your initials and date of birth in your header or footer (to allow anonymous marking).  Be no more than 2000 words in length. SUNWAY-OXBRIDGE ESSAY COMPETITION 2022 EXTENDED TO 29 APRIL 2022

Sunway Group’s Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2022 has extended its submission deadline to 29 April 2022 to allow more students to participate in light of the encouraging response.

Back for its ninth year, the competition aims to promote and boost English proficiency among secondary school students using the Malaysian syllabus nationwide. The competition offers prizes worth more than RM 200,000 in cash, bursaries and Sunway PALS points to be won.

The Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition is the most popular of its kind in the country organised by Sunway Group, The Oxford and Cambridge Society Malaysia, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Sunway University, with support from Sunway PALS and fully endorsed by the Ministry of Education.

oxbridge essay competitions 2022

This year’s essay competition will revolve around the theme of ‘humility’.

As per previous years, students will be required to submit their winning entries through the official portal, www.sunway.com.my/essay, starting 28 March to 29 April 2022 (by 1.00 pm).

Since its inception in 2014, more than 22,000 students have participated in the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition.

The third prize – RM1,000 in cash, a Sunway bursary worth           RM 8,000, 10,000 Sunway PALS Points, an award certificate and a trophy.

Malaysians have proven time and time again that we are capable of being kind, helpful, and inclusive <3

Remember the time when LRT commuters quietly showed kindness towards an elderly man? Or when thousands flocked to a local gurdwara to help others in need during the floods in Selangor last December? These heartwarming sentiments even extend to our little furry friends, from cute whale sharks  to  cuddly kittens . :')

With that in mind, Sunway wants to inspire young Malaysians for a better tomorrow. This year, through their annual essay competition, students will get to demonstrate their writing skills, while also highlighting their thoughts about inclusion and diversity.

Returning for its ninth year, the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition  aims to promote quality writing in English, on top of fostering a better future for the next generation.

Organised by Sunway Group, the Oxford and Cambridge Society Malaysia, Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, as well as Sunway University, with support from Sunway PALS, the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition is fully endorsed by the Ministry of Education.

This annual competition by Sunway has garnered more than 22,000 participants since it began in 2014, making it one of the longest-running and most popular local literary contests.

The theme that students will have to centre their essay on this year is 'humility'

The Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2022 is open to all Malaysian students under the national syllabus, from Form 1 to Form 5, with a focus on the topic of humility.

Essay entries can be submitted from 28 March to 25 April (by 1pm).

There are two categories for the competition:

Category A (Form 1 to 3) - Write a 200 to 350-word essay on 'Malaysia is a country with religious diversity. Discuss how mutual respect can help people from different religious beliefs coexist harmoniously.'

Category B (Form 4 to 5) - Write a 500 to 650-word essay on 'Malaysia is a multiracial country. Make an argument for a more inclusive school that values the diverse backgrounds and perspectives of its students and outline the benefits this would bring.'

And, winners will be rewarded with over RM200,000 in bursaries and prizes!

Students will have to submit their essays online during the first phase. In the second phase, finalists across Malaysia will be invited to have a sit-down essay writing assessment on 23 July 2022 at Sunway University in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, Sunway College Ipoh, Sunway College Johor Bahru, and Sunway College Kuching.

A total of 13 winners will be chosen from each category.

Writing Your Essay

What are the subject categories i can enter for, how long should my essay be.

There are three parts to the essay:

  • Essay title: the title of your essay can be up to 100 characters long, including spaces
  • Essay: your essay can have up to 3,800 characters , including spaces (this is about 500 words). This includes everything you write, like the main text and in-text citations. In-text citations are little notes you put in your essay to show where your information came from. For example, if you quote something from a book by John Smith, you would add (Smith, 2010, p. 50) right after the quote. These citations are part of your word count, so make sure to include them
  • References: as for references, there’s no word limit – you can include as many as you need! These are important for showing where your information came from. Please use the Harvard Referencing Style for your references (you can find how to do this in the guidelines provided here ). This won’t count towards your essay character limit, so please list all the sources you used

What are the evaluation criteria?

We’ll be assessing essays on the following criteria:

  • Fluency of written English
  • Relevance to the question
  • Creativity and originality of ideas
  • Use of evidence or examples
  • Relevance to the OxBright Worldview

Should I use references?

Please make sure to include references to your sources, using the Harvard Referencing Style (guidelines here ).

What makes a good essay?

Make sure to read our criteria carefully (you can find it in the FAQ above).

We want essays that are thoroughly researched, packed with examples and solid evidence. What really catches our attention are essays with unique analysis. So, we’re not just interested in essays that simply describe things – we want your thoughts, analysis, and fresh ideas.

Don’t forget, it’s crucial to use and mention trustworthy sources for the evidence you provide.

Do you accept personal or descriptive essays?

We’re looking for clear, concise and compelling answers to the question above, written and formatted in an academic style. Please don’t submit personal essays or creative writing samples.

What Happens Next?

When will i hear the results.

We’ll be in touch within two weeks of your entry to let you know whether or not you’ve been shortlisted (all entrants who meet our core standards of relevance and coherence will be shortlisted).

All shortlisted entrants and their parents and teachers will be invited to our Awards Ceremony in May 2024, when the winners in each subject category will be announced.

How are essays assessed?

You can read about the criteria we use to assess your essay in the FAQ above (“What are the evaluation criteria?”).

Essays are assessed using our proprietary system which combines a mixture of technology and personal assessment. Essays which are deemed to be plagiarised or be written by AI will be rejected and our decision on this is final.

There are two stages to our assessment process:

Shorlisting Our first stage assessment reviews whether the essay is relevant and coherent. If so, your essay will be shortlisted, you will be offered a free place at an OxBright Conference and you will be invited to the Awards Ceremony.

Awards Shortlised essays are then given further assessment by our panel. This includes a review of the References. In the application form, we ask for a the name of a teacher who is familiar with your academic work. If your essay is nominated for an Award, we will ask this teacher to confirm that the essay was genuinely written by you.

What are the prizes?

Please click here for more information about the prizes and awards.

Why is the overall prize a place at Oxford Scholastica in 2025, not 2024?

Will i receive feedback.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of entries received, we are unable to provide feedback on essays.

Does everyone who enters get a free place at a Conference?

The first thousand students to who make a valid submission and are shortlisted will be invited to attend an OxBright Conference of their choice, free of charge (worth £95). Conference subjects include Business, Medicine, Law and Psychology. It is optional to attend a Conference.

Alternatively, you’ll be able to choose to apply the £95 credit toward another programme with us.

Does everyone receive a certificate?

Only students who win one of the awards receive a certificate. Certificates are issued in online format.

Do you publish the names of the award winners?

Tiny Memoir Contest for Students: Write a 100-Word Personal Narrative

We invite teenagers to tell a true story about a meaningful life experience in just 100 words. Contest dates: Nov. 6 to Dec. 4, 2024.

A banner of six purple and black illustrations. From left to right: a woman hanging a star in a window with the help of a little girl; two men staring lovingly at each other over a small table; a man presenting a miniature Christmas tree to his pet fish; a frog reaching out his arms to a squiggly figure; three family members piled on top of each other on a couch; a woman looking pensively out a widow as it snows outside.

By The Learning Network

Illustrations from Modern Love’s Tiny Love Stories , the inspiration for this contest.

Can you tell a meaningful and interesting true story from your life in just 100 words? That’s the challenge we pose to teenagers with our 100-Word Personal Narrative Contest, a storytelling form popularized by Modern Love’s Tiny Love Stories series .

After running this contest for two years, receiving a total of more than 25,000 entries, and honoring dozens of excellent miniature teen-written memoirs, we have discovered the answer is a resounding yes .

So, we challenge you to try it yourself.

We’re not asking you to write to a particular theme or to use a specific structure or style, but we are looking for short, powerful stories about a particular moment or event in your life. We want to hear your story, told in your unique voice, and we hope you’ll experiment with style and form to tell a tale that matters to you, in a way you enjoy telling it.

And, yes, it’s possible to do all that in only 100 words. For proof, just look at last year’s 15 winning entries . We also have a step-by-step guide full of advice that is grounded in 25 excellent 100-word mentor texts, as well as a rehearsal space , published for our first year’s contest, that has over 1,000 student-written mini memoirs. Because that space was so successful, we’re keeping it open for this year’s contest. We hope students will use it to get inspiration, experiment and encourage each other.

Take a look at the full guidelines and related resources below. Please post any questions you have in the comments and we’ll answer you there, or write to us at [email protected]. And, consider hanging this PDF one-page announcement on your class bulletin board.

EXCERPTS FROM WINNING ESSAYS

Grades 1-3: Essay Topic: Write a paragraph about a book from your school or public library that taught you something important .

Cordelia Haley – Megan Cuellar’s 2 nd grade class – Lena Whitmore “What I learned from books about Martin Luther King. Stand up for what you believe no matter what. Don’t fight with fists, fight with words. No matter what time it is, there’s always work to do!”

Leo Johnson – Sophia Curet’s 3 rd grade class -St. Mary’s Elementary “In the story “Being Frank” by Donna Earnhardt I learned that you should always tell the truth but say it nicely. In this story Frank says the truth but he says it in an unkind way. His grandpa shows him how to tell the truth in a nice way. I really enjoyed this book because it’s a really fun story and it teaches you a good lesson.”

Grades 4-5 Essay Topic: Write a three paragraph thank-you letter to your school or public library discussing an aspect of the library that you value most .

Fern Newlan – Shannon Nierman’s 4 th grade class – St Mary’s

“People who have libraries sometimes overlook the information they provide…. Here are a few things that libraries provide: books, computers and most importantly knowledge. I’m going to thank the people who write the books.” Among others, she thanks author Barbra O’Conner who “relates to the real world. She shows us that not everything is perfect, but you might find you were supposed to be here all along.”

Catherine Apt – Wes Bascom’s 4 th grade class – McDonald Elementary

“At a young age, Storytime encouraged my interest in reading and helped develop my creativity. It allowed me to be more open minded about different ideas and pushed me to be a creative thinker.” “I have discovered new books by browsing, which has allowed me to find some of my new favorite books. Thank you for having such a fun variety of materials and activities for me to experience throughout my childhood.”

Amy Zhou – Kathryn Bonzo’s 4 th grade class – Moscow Charter School

“Libraries want humans and our civilization to have openness for all to be educated and also give us freedom to read, write, and listen which is essential to our democracy.” “The thing I value most about the library is the huge selection of books. I love reading and the library has books for me to read. Thank you for being a generous provider.

Naya Lee – Jordyn Rauer’s 5 th grade class – Lena Whitmore

“My favorite subject is reading, so our school library is very important to me. I love that all students have a wide selection of books to choose from, so that they can all find something that they love.” “I am so glad to have our librarian, Mrs. Marone and her library so that all the kids in our school can have free and easy access to wonderful books.”

Emily Scout Heward – Kate Roll’s 5 th grade class– Lena Whitmore

“I’m little but I’m old enough to know that our library is AWESOME, BEAUTFUL, WONDERFUL, CREATIVE, CALMING and so much more. If we don’t have libraries, we might not have books! When I’m 80 I want to be able to visit our library and show many more generations this wonderful creation.”

FACT TIME! Did you know that the library of congress is the largest library in the world! They have 167 million items on 838 miles of bookshelves!!”

Grades 6-8 Essay Topic: Write a five-paragraph essay explaining why freedom of expression is important to your library and to our democracy.

Nora Algarni – Tiffany Scripter’s 7 th grade English class – Moscow Middle School

“If a student reads a book, they might get an opinion on something that could change the future. A book could change a whole generation, and it could change the whole world. So, limiting students from the access of information is not the best option. Let teenagers explore the libraries and have their opinion and thoughts… This is why freedom of expression should be important everywhere because everyone should express themselves and share their opinions with the world.”

Lillian Camin – Tiffany Scripter’s 7 th grade English class – Moscow Middle School –

“Freedom of expression can be very important to both school and public libraries as well. According to the American Library Association Library Bill of Rights, all library resources have to be provided and given to establish interests, and to give enlightenment and information to everyone.” “ I believe that freedom of expression is important for democracies. I think this because of the sharing of ideas and open opinions that help democracies run. One of these reasons is that we have to gain opinions to make decisions and we have to make decisions if we want to govern ourselves.”

Grades 9-12 Essay Topic: Research the current debate over the freedom of expression in school and public libraries. Write a report on this debate, then draw your own conclusions.

Morgan Apt – Rachel Lyons’ Junior Advanced Placement class – Moscow High School –” I believe that the removal of books and censorship in public libraries is drastic and unnecessary. Allowing children to have access to information that is not age appropriate is not ideal. However, violating people’s rights to access material containing any type of perspective or idea is too extreme a measure to prevent children from exposure to harmful information. Additionally, the government could use the removal of inappropriate books to their advantage, disposing not only of books that could be damaging to children, but books that don’t align with certain personal or political beliefs. …. Freedom of expression is heavily valued in a democracy, and literature is a prime example of where differing perspectives and viewpoints are shared…. as allowed under the First Amendment. “

Ukrainian President Zelensky had chided Modi then for hugging Putin during their meeting.

Modi Will Visit Ukraine a Month After Meeting Putin in Moscow

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (left) and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi meet on the sidelines of the G-7 Outreach Summit in Apulia, Italy, June 14, 2024.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Ukraine this week and meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the two countries announced Monday, weeks after Modi met President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Modi will visit Ukraine on Zelenskyy’s invitation on Friday, Tanmaya Lal, a senior official at the Ministry of External Affairs, said at a briefing in New Delhi. He said the visit would provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss cooperation in defense, economic and business ties, science and technology, and other sectors.

Ukraine’s Presidential Office also announced Modi’s trip, saying it’s his first visit during which two leaders will sign multiple cooperation documents and discuss “matters of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.”

Modi’s trip to Ukraine comes a month after Zelenskyy criticized his two-day visit to Moscow in July, when he met with Putin on the day Russian missiles struck across Ukraine, killing scores of people.

Zelenskyy had described the meeting as a “huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day.” He also chided Modi for hugging Putin during their meeting.

Modi did not address the strikes directly during his trip, but alluded to the bloodshed while speaking about his meeting with Putin.

“Be it war, a struggle, or a terrorist attack, every person who believes in humanity, when there is loss of life, he is pained,” Modi said then. “When innocent children are killed, when we see innocent children dying, then the heart pains. And that pain is very horrible.”

India has avoided condemning Russia’s invasion and instead has urged Russia and Ukraine to resolve the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

“The conflict is ongoing and we believe that the resolution to this conflict can only come through dialogue and diplomacy,” Lal said on Monday. He said, “India has consistently advocated for diplomacy and dialogue to reach a negotiated settlement.”

Under Modi, New Delhi is seeking to deepen its relationship with the West while also keeping ties with Moscow, a major defense supplier for India. He has carefully avoided rubbing Moscow the wrong way given the countries’ partnership dating back to the Cold War.

India has also become a key buyer of Russian oil following sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies that shut most Western markets off to Russian exports. India now gets more than 40 percent of its oil imports from Russia, according to analysts.

The United States has also raised concerns over India’s relationship with Russia, especially at a time when Washington has been seeking to strengthen ties with New Delhi as a counterweight to China.

At the time of Modi’s Moscow visit, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had cautioned New Delhi that “a bet on Russia as a long-term, reliable partner is not a good bet.” The U.S. was also concerned with the timing of Modi’s visit as it came in the middle of the NATO Summit being held in Washington, where the West moved to bolster Ukraine.

Modi and Zelenskyy last met in June on the sidelines of the Group of Seven meeting in Italy. The two leaders have also spoken several times by phone since the start of the war.

Ukraine is interested in strengthening trade and economic ties with India, particularly agricultural exports, aviation cooperation, and pharmaceutical and industrial product trade, the Ukrainian president said earlier this year.

Bilateral trade between India and Ukraine countries has grown significantly in the last 25 years, reaching $3.3 billion in the 2021-2022 financial year, according to India’s foreign ministry.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, India has also provided almost 100 tons of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and neighboring countries.
