7th Grade ELA Course Summary

In 7th Grade English Language Arts, students will explore thematic questions related to identity, class, socialization, environment, and community in order to answer the essential question: How are humans driven by the need to belong? Students will see examples of teenagers who are discovering what makes them unique and how their individual identities contribute to a larger collective as they engage with diverse literary works including poems, plays, graphic novels, short stories and film: Uprising , Flesh and Blood So Cheap , A Raisin in the Sun , The House on Mango Street , American Born Chinese , and relevant short texts . Over the course of the year, students will think deeply about the complex past, present, and future of America, and how to define their ever-changing identity as a nation. Across the 6 units, students deepen their writing skills through argumentative, informational, and narrative tasks, and continue to build their academic vocabularies, speaking and listening skills, and social-emotional competencies.

Throughout the course, students address all ELA Common Core Standards as they engage with increasingly complex texts , participate in class discussions, and write daily. Each unit helps build students’ knowledge and understanding of the world around them through thematically organized core and supplemental texts, embedded writing instruction and extended writing assignments in response to Essential Questions, and daily opportunities to engage in multiple tiers of academic discourse .

Glance at English Chapter 2 A Gift of Chappals Class 7

Mridu, a young girl living with her grandparents, visits her aunt Rukku Manni's house with her grandmother Tapi. She meets her cousins Lalli, Ravi, and Meena.

Ravi and Meena show Mridu a kitten hidden in a torn football in the backyard, which they named Mahendravarma Pallava Poonai (M.P. Poonai). They claim the kitten is a descendant of the Egyptian Cat Goddess Bastet.

They are distracted by a screeching sound from Lalli's violin practice, taught by a visiting music master.

A regular visiting beggar, who was told not to come again, shows the children his blistered feet. Mridu suggests finding chappals for him, but they can't find any until Mridu recalls seeing odd-looking chappals at the entrance.

Ravi gives the beggar the chappals, who leave gratefully. Later, the music master discovers his chappals missing, causing a commotion.

Rukku Manni resolves the issue by giving the music master Gopu Mama's new chappals. Afterwards, she laughs with Mridu, imagining Gopu Mama's reaction to his chappals being given away.

Comprehension check.

1. What is the secret that Meena shares with Mridu in the backyard?

Ans: Meena shared the secret that they have brought home a kitten which they found out that morning outside the gate. And they have kept him hidden.

2. How does Ravi get milk for the kitten?

Ans: Getting milk for the kitten was a big task for Ravi because it will be great trouble if Patti comes to know about the kitten. Patti saw him with a glass of milk so he had to drink most of the milk to show that he was actually hungry and then he had to run to the kitten and pour the remaining milk. Then run back to the kitchen, wash the tumbler and put it back in its place so that she doesn't get suspicious about it.

3. Who does he say the kitten’s ancestors are? Do you believe him?

Ans: The Mahabalipuram Rishi-Cat, he claimed, was the kitten's ancestor. Also, he says that cats were worshipped in ancient Egypt. No, I don't believe him.

4. Ravi has a lot to say about M.P.Poonai. This shows that

(i) he is merely trying to impress Mridu.

(ii) his knowledge of history is sound.

(iii) he has a rich imagination.

(iv) he is an intelligent child.

Which of these statements do you agree/disagree with?

Ans: I agree to these statements:

5. What was the noise that startled Mridu and frightened Mahendran?

Ans: The sound of the violin that Lalli was learning to play startled Mridu and frightened Mahendran.

6. The music master is making lovely music. Read aloud the sentence in the text that expresses this idea.

Ans: “The music master’s notes seemed to float up and settle perfectly into the invisible tracks of the melody. It was like the wheels of a train fitting smoothly into the rails and whizzing along” This sentence in the text expresses the idea that the music master is making lovely music.

7. Had the beggar come to Rukku Manni’s house for the first time? Give reasons for your answer.

Ans: The beggar had not arrived at Rukku Manni's house for the first time; Paati had told Tapi that he had been coming to their door every day for the previous week. "It's time to find him another house to beg from!" she added. This demonstrates that she was familiar with him.

8. “A sharp V-shaped line had formed between her eyebrows.” What does it suggest to you about Rukku Manni’s mood?

Ans: This suggests that Rukki Manni was really very angry when she came to know about the missing slippers.

She suggests finding an old pair of slippers so that they can help the beggar.

4. “Have you, children...” she began, and then, seeing they were curiously quiet, went on more slowly, “seen anyone lurking around the verandah?”

(i)What do you think Rukku Manni really wanted to ask?

Rukku Manni really wanted to ask the children if they had seen the music teacher's slippers.

(ii) Why did she change her question?

She changed her question because children were curiously quiet and she understood that the children must have done something mischievous with chappals.

(iii) What did she think had happened?

She thought that some vendor must have stolen the slippers.

5. On getting Gopu Mama’s chappals, the music teacher tried not to look too happy. Why?

Ans: The music teacher tried not to smile since he didn't want to express his joy at receiving new chappals, which Gopu Mama had never worn before.

6. On getting a gift of chappals, the beggar vanished in a minute. Why was he in such a hurry to leave?

Ans: On getting a gift of chappals, the beggar vanished in a minute because he needed them badly and he did not want to lose the gift of those chappals. His feet were blistering, and he couldn't have asked for a nicer house.

7. Walking towards the kitchen with Mridu and Meena, Rukku Manni began to laugh. What made her laugh?
