UK Care Homes Offering Visa Sponsorship – A Guide for International Candidates

Staff Writer

The UK’s social care sector has faced chronic staff shortages for years. To help fill vacancies, some care homes now provide visa sponsorship to overseas candidates as a recruitment incentive. This allows international workers to live and work in the UK legally for an extended period.

In this Article:

Overview of the UK Care Home Job Market

The UK has an aging population, with over  12 million residents now aged 65 or older . As demand for elderly care rises, care homes are struggling to recruit enough staff to meet needs.

  • Key stats on the care home job market:Approximately  410,000 people work in UK care homes
  • 122,000 care home staff vacancies existed as of 2022  – a vacancy rate of nearly 30%
  • Staff turnover averages 30% annually
  • Median care worker hourly pay was only £9.01 in 2022  – an increase of just 8 pence from 2021

Filling open care roles has become extremely challenging. As a result, some providers now offer visa sponsorship to recruit internationally.

What is Visa Sponsorship?

Visa sponsorship allows UK employers to hire foreign nationals by sponsoring them to work in the country legally. The employer must be approved by UK Visas and Immigration to act as a licensed sponsor. They will then provide a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to candidates they wish to hire from overseas.

With a valid CoS, international candidates can apply for a UK work visa. The visa allows them to live and work in the UK for an extended period, normally up to 5 years.

Types of UK Work Visas

There are several visa routes potentially open to care workers:

Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker Visa covers most professional and skilled roles. Applicants must have a confirmed job offer from a licensed sponsor for a eligible occupation. Care home nurses can qualify for this visa by meeting these main requirements:

  • Have acceptance from licensed sponsor
  • Prove adequate English language ability
  • Show qualification documents
  • Meet salary threshold ( currently £25,600 )

Health and Care Worker Visa

The Health and Care Worker Visa provides a sponsored route specifically for care professionals. It has lower eligibility requirements than the Skilled Worker Visa. All care home staff in customer-facing roles may be eligible, including:

  • Care assistants
  • Care workers
  • Support workers

Key requirements are:

  • Have Certificate of Sponsorship
  • Show English language skills
  • Pass criminal record checks
  • Pay healthcare surcharge

There is no minimum salary threshold. But employers must pay eligible workers at least £10.10 per hour.

Youth Mobility Scheme

The Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) offers working holiday visas for young people from certain countries. Requirements are:

  • Have £2,530 in savings
  • Meet country eligibility rules

The YMS allows participants to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years.

Last Updated: 21/08/2024

Care homes in the UK have undergone a makeover in recent years. Now bursting with vibrant colours and modern furniture and bustling with activities, events and entertainment, the UK’s best care homes take pride in the high levels of quality care they offer, along with luxurious facilities and stunning grounds.

In this article, we look at some truly spectacular care homes in the UK, many of which have received a much sought-after ‘Outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission .

Kickstart your care search

Find the best care homes in your area through Lottie.

What is the CQC?

First things first – what is the CQC? On your search for the best care home near you, you’ll likely come across the CQC a lot.

CQC stands for the Care Quality Commission , an independent regulator of health and social care in England.

Scotland, Wales and Ireland have different Care Quality Regulators, so be aware of this if you’re looking outside England.

The CQC registers, monitors and inspects care homes and gives them one of four ratings:

Outstanding (for exceptional service)

Good (for a service that meets expectations)

Requires Improvement (for a service that is not performing as expected)

Inadequate (poor performance)

The CQC will always take action against underperforming care homes to find ways to improve them.

The Importance of CQC Ratings

Less than 4% of England’s care homes are rated ‘Outstanding’ by CQC.

CQC ratings are important because they give a trustworthy indication of a care home’s quality, including the staff’s expertise and their treatment of residents, the cleanliness of the premises and its equipment, the food, safety measures and much more.

All care homes should display a CQC rating, so it’s always good to check. You can use Lottie to search for CQC outstanding care homes near you.

Now, let’s dive into some of the UK’s best care homes.

Nhs jobs: frequently asked questions, welcome to our nhs jobs page, featuring all the latest roles throughout the uk, as well as frequently asked questions below., what sort of nursing jobs are there in the nhs.

NHS jobs for nurses go far beyond core nursing roles such as general nursing or children’s nursing.

At entry level, it could include roles a student nurse could take on for extra money, such as a Healthcare Assistant. But at the other end, it could include specialised or more senior roles, including an Oncology Nurse, Theatre Nurse, Senior Nurse or Nurse Practitioner.

All of these roles require different levels of skills or experience, and involve working in many different settings including hospitals, community settings, care homes or specialist clinics.

What are the daily responsibilities in an NHS nursing role?

Your daily duties will vary greatly depending on what role you take, your specialist area and your level of seniority. However, at a very broad level your responsibilities could include:

• Observing and recording the condition of patients

• Managing and administering medication and injections

• Helping doctors with assessments, operations and consultations

• Planning discharges from hospitals

• Educating patients about their ongoing health

• Working with patients’ families to help them understand their situation and supporting them with ongoing care plans

If you work in a hospital, you’ll work in a shift pattern which could include some night shifts and unsociable hours. Roles in the community, meanwhile, are more likely to follow a more standardised Monday to Friday, 9-5 pattern.

How do you get a job in the NHS?

To become a Nurse you need to be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC). And to be eligible to register you need to complete a nursing degree in any of these four core areas: adult, child, mental health and learning disabilities.

Thereafter, to move into a specialist area, like paediatrics or theatre nursing, you’ll probably need to undertake some postgraduate training – and you’ll definitely need to gain some experience within your chosen area.

However, if you decide to start your NHS journey as a Healthcare Assistant, there are no set entry requirements. You’ll normally need good literacy and communication skills, and some providers will ask for GCSEs in English and Maths.

Beyond entry-level Healthcare Assistant positions, the two major qualifications for development are the NCFE CACHE level 2 and 3 certificates in healthcare support. These can normally be studied for while you’re working, and your employer may well support you through an apprenticeship.

How much can you earn in an NHS nursing job ?

Average earnings vary according to your specialism, seniority, experience and qualifications.

Newly qualified Band 5 Nurses earn more than £25,000 a year – rising incrementally every year until you reach the top of your banding. This salary remains the same regardless of your specialism – so Band 5 Staff Nurse jobs pay the same as, for example, Band 5 Mental Health Nurse jobs.

From there, more experience and qualifications can help you to earn in excess of £35,000 a year.

Advanced Nurses, Modern Matrons and Nurse Consultants can earn much, much more – with some consultant-level Nurses earning more than £70,000 a year.

In addition to a transparent salary, one of the biggest perks of working in the NHS is a generous benefits package, which includes a good pension and excellent holiday and maternity/paternity allowances.

500,000 homes to benefit as UK’s Shetland wind farm gets connected to grid

The Viking Wind Farm is set to become the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm.

The Shetland Islands have been connected to the Great Britain (GB) electricity grid for the first time. This achievement marks a major milestone for the United Kingdom’s clean energy ambitions. It has been realized through two pioneering projects: the Viking Wind Farm and a 161.6 miles (260-kilometer) subsea transmission link.

As the windiest region in the UK, Shetland is uniquely positioned to harness wind energy, making it a leading contributor to the nation’s wind energy production.

These initiatives underscore the UK’s commitment to enhancing its renewable energy capacity and reducing carbon emissions.

The Viking Wind Farm, developed by SSE Renewables, is set to become the most productive onshore wind farm in the UK. Equipped with 103 Vestas turbines, the farm boasts an installed capacity of 443MW, expected to generate around 1.8 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable electricity annually.

This output is substantial enough to power nearly 500,000 homes each year, marking a significant increase in the UK’s clean energy capacity. As the UK’s most productive onshore wind farm, Viking represents a crucial step toward achieving the nation’s renewable energy goals.

Subsea transmission: Linking Shetland to the mainland

The second cornerstone of this achievement is the 260-kilometer subsea transmission link, which transports electricity generated by the Viking Wind Farm from Shetland to the GB mainland. Installed by SSEN Transmission, this high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link was laid in three campaigns using the specialized cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria.

The link connects a new converter station at Kergord in Shetland to a switching station at Noss Head on the Scottish mainland. This connection marks the first time that electricity generated in Shetland can flow directly to the rest of the UK, bolstering energy security and providing a reliable supply of renewable energy.

The completion of the Viking Wind Farm and the subsea transmission link represents a substantial £1 billion investment by SSE. This is part of SSE’s broader $25.6 billion (£20.5 billion) commitment to UK clean energy infrastructure by 2027, one of the largest private investments in clean energy the country has ever seen.

The success of these projects demonstrates the significant impact that private sector investments can have on advancing the UK’s renewable energy capabilities.

Unlocking Shetland’s green energy potential

The subsea cable does more than just transport electricity. It also unlocks the green energy potential of the Shetland Islands.

Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “The completion of these projects is a significant step in unlocking the green energy potential of the Shetland Islands. These developments will not only aid us in our efforts to decarbonize our energy system but help to stimulate sustainable economic growth in the local area.”

This connection allows clean energy generated in Shetland to flow to the mainland, providing a new source of renewable energy for the UK and ensuring a reliable supply of electricity for the islands. It also positions Shetland as a key player in the UK’s renewable energy landscape.

The role of Viking in the UK’s clean energy mission

UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband highlighted the vital role Viking will play in the UK’s clean energy mission, stating, “By Switching on Viking, hundreds of thousands of homes in the Shetlands and right across the country will benefit from cheap, homegrown energy, and this project has created jobs and growth for local communities.”

The Viking Wind Farm and the subsea link are not just about generating clean energy. They are also focused on creating sustainable economic opportunities and ensuring energy independence for the UK.

The Viking Wind Farm and the HVDC link have already made a significant impact on the local economy and employment in Shetland. During peak construction, these projects supported around 650 jobs and contributed $156.3 million (£125 million) to the Shetland economy.

The ongoing operations of the Viking Wind Farm will continue to support 35 permanent roles and are expected to contribute over $87.6 million (£70 million) to the local economy over the lifetime of the wind farm. These economic benefits are a testament to the positive impact that large-scale renewable energy projects can have on local communities.

Community benefits: The Viking community fund

Beyond economic gains, the Viking Wind Farm has also brought significant community benefits through the Viking Community Fund. Managed by community representatives, this fund is the largest for a single renewable project in Great Britain, totaling over $91.3 million (£72 million).

The fund focuses on priority areas identified by Shetland residents, such as youth programs, housing, and transportation, and has already supported nearly 200 local projects. This fund ensures that the benefits of the Viking Wind Farm are felt throughout the community, enhancing the quality of life for residents.

The Viking Wind Farm is a critical addition to the UK’s renewable energy portfolio, increasing the combined onshore and offshore wind capacity to over 30GW—enough to meet the annual power needs of 26 million homes. This milestone is a clear indicator of the UK’s commitment to transitioning to a clean energy future.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, SSE Chief Executive, remarked , “Delivery of both the Viking Wind Farm and Shetland HVDC Transmission link are big engineering achievements and together represent a major milestone on the UK’s path to a clean energy system.”

Shetland’s role in the uk’s energy future.

With the completion of these projects, the Shetland Islands are poised to play a crucial role in the UK’s renewable energy landscape.

Dan McGrail, Renewable UK Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of the Viking project, noting, “When the Viking project was first conceived nearly twenty years ago, the UK’s wind capacity stood at less than five gigawatts, and turbines were around 75% less efficient than they are now.”

HCA charged over patient death in Nottingham

29 August, 2024 By Gemma Mitchell

A woman has been charged over a patient death that happened while she was working as an agency healthcare assistant at a mental health hospital in Nottingham.

Louise Furlong, 19, died on 12 September 2022 after an incident the previous day at Highbury Hospital, part of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

“The safety of our patients and the quality of care we provide is of paramount importance" Ifti Majid

Nottinghamshire Police has now announced that Sylvia Quaye-Mensah, who was on duty at the time of the incident, has been charged with ‘misconduct in a public office’, in relation to Ms Furlong’s death.

While police described her as a nurse, Nottinghamshire Healthcare has now confirmed that Quaye-Mensah was an agency healthcare support worker.

Quaye-Mensah, 41, of Ilkeston, is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (30 August).

Detective inspector Craig Hall, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We have been investigating this incident for some time and have now charged a suspect.

“Louise’s family have been informed of this development and remain in our thoughts.”

Ifti Majid, chief executive of Nottinghamshire Healthcare, said the trust had cancelled all of Quaye-Mensah’s shifts following Ms Furlong’s death and alerted the agency that she worked for.

Mr Majid said: “On behalf of the trust, I once again offer sincere condolences to Louise’s family and friends for their loss.

“The safety of our patients and the quality of care we provide is of paramount importance.

“Sylvia Quaye-Mensah was an agency healthcare support worker at the trust and following Louise’s death we immediately cancelled all shifts and informed her employing agency.

“We are unable to comment further while judicial processes are ongoing.”

This story was amended at 2.35pm on 29 August 2024 following a statement received from the trust confirming that Sylvia Quaye-Mensah was a healthcare support worker, not a nurse as described by police.

What We Know About Kamala Harris’s $5 Trillion Tax Plan So Far

The vice president supports the tax increases proposed by the Biden White House, according to her campaign.

  • Share full article

Kamala Harris, in a lavender blazer, speaking into two mics at a lectern with a crowd of people seated behind her.

By Andrew Duehren

Reporting from Washington

In a campaign otherwise light on policy specifics, Vice President Kamala Harris this week quietly rolled out her most detailed, far-ranging proposal yet: nearly $5 trillion in tax increases over a decade.

That’s how much more revenue the federal government would raise if it adopted a number of tax increases that President Biden proposed in the spring . Ms. Harris’s campaign said this week that she supported those tax hikes, which were thoroughly laid out in the most recent federal budget plan prepared by the Biden administration.

No one making less than $400,000 a year would see their taxes go up under the plan. Instead, Ms. Harris is seeking to significantly raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. Congress has previously rejected many of these tax ideas, even when Democrats controlled both chambers.

While tax policy is right now a subplot in a turbulent presidential campaign, it will be a primary policy issue in Washington next year. The next president will have to work with Congress to address the tax cuts Donald J. Trump signed into law in 2017. Many of those tax cuts expire after 2025, meaning millions of Americans will see their taxes go up if lawmakers don’t reach a deal next year.

Here’s an overview of what we now know — and still don’t know — about the Democratic nominee’s views on taxes.

Higher taxes on corporations

The most recent White House budget includes several proposals that would raise taxes on large corporations . Chief among them is raising the corporate tax rate to 28 percent from 21 percent, a step that the Treasury Department estimated could bring in $1.3 trillion in revenue over the next 10 years.
