Advantages of the Internet
The role of the internet in the modern world cannot be understated. Nowadays, every person uses the internet to do their daily tasks. People in different fields like offices, schools, colleges, hospitals etc., use their electronic devices like laptops, computers, tablets, cell phones etc., to make their work simple and fast. The internet has also made access to information easier. We can learn about the whole universe with just a single click by using the internet. We can easily communicate and share information with other people around the world with the help of email, instant messaging, video calls etc.
The internet delivers a wide variety of advantages. It not only enables people to share information but also serves as a place to store information and media digitally. This feature has benefitted the fields of education and research the most. We have seen a boom in the e-commerce business as they have used the internet and provided a seamless experience of buying and selling products online. It has created a large market for online retailers and integrated different business fields. Due to this facility, people can now purchase almost everything they need and get it delivered right to their doorstep in a few days. Many services are now provided on the internet, such as online booking, banking, hotel reservations etc.
The internet has made everything a lot more accessible and quick. Most organisations around the world advertise their vacancies on the internet. So, people can search for different types of jobs around the world. The internet provides different types of entertainment to people; be it music, movies, theatre, entertainment, live matches, or live broadcasts. It also helps students to continue their learning through online education.
It is difficult to name all of the benefits and advantages of the internet. This is because the internet has become so entangled and integrated into our daily lives that it has an influence on everything we experience around us.
Disadvantages of the Internet
Although the internet has many advantages, it also has some disadvantages. In the next section of the advantages and disadvantages of the internet essay, let us discuss the disadvantages and the possible risks associated with the modern-day applications of the internet.
While the internet provides us with all tools, products and services we need right at our doorstep, at the same time, it isolates us from the world outside. As we get more accustomed to ordering everything online, be it clothes, food, drinks, grocery, commodities, or even paying bills, getting out of the house has become less frequent. This has caused health issues and various mental health issues such as social anxiety, insomnia and even depression. Teenagers and kids are the most influenced by the internet as they are the generation which has seen the immense use of the internet. They are moulded to a life dependent on the internet. This hinders their learning capabilities and real-life problem-solving skills because they are accustomed to using their mobile for every task.
Today, the internet is the most popular source of viruses in electronic gadgets. As we perform various activities on the internet, we are exposing ourselves to various threats such as malicious software and viruses. Due to these viruses, confidential data may be accessed by unauthorised people or hackers. Some websites contain immoral materials in the form of text, pictures or movies. These websites damage the character of the new generation, especially kids and teenagers. A lot of time is wasted collecting information on the internet. Many people become addicted to spending time on the internet, like chatting with friends or playing games. A lot of information about a particular topic is stored on websites. Some information may be incorrect or not authentic. So, it becomes difficult to select the correct information.
From the information covered in this advantages and disadvantages essay, it can be said that the benefits of the internet outweigh the disadvantages and threats it brings. The responsibility to be safe falls on the users themselves. One needs to stay vigilant and perform regular security checks on their network and computing devices to ensure they are secure from any online attacks. Provided that all government regulations for safe internet browsing are followed and appropriate measures are taken.

The Internet’s Good and Bad Sides Essay
Introduction, works cited.
This is the era of the information age. Currently there are over two billion internet users in the world. The internet is the fastest growing market place and many companies are increasingly adopting internet related technologies to tap to the growing market. The internet also has been the source of multi billion companies like Google and facebook that solely derive their revenues from the net.
These companies and many more have products that have made sure millions of people are hooked to the internet for work and leisure. Because it’s a virtual place that is not very limited, the internet has been on the receiving end of both criticism and praises.
It’s a fact that the internet is an employer to millions of people who work and do business online. However, its also a known fact the internet is a place for many people to waste time and many companies have tangibly proved that productivity falls when employees engage in internet related activities (Marzilli 34).
Similarly, the internet is the source of many online relationships that people form with virtual partners that normally lead to the breakage of their marriages or stable relationships. The negatives that have characterized the net have therefore led some critics like William Gibson to declare that the internet is a just a waste of time. It’s not any better than the entertainment technologies that preceded it. In fact he thinks its worse. This paper will therefore seek to determine if the net is a waste of time and if so, in what ways.
Did you know that Facebook has over 700 million users today? Did you know that many other social networking sites like Twitter and My space account for hundreds of millions of other online users? Did you also know that Google is the biggest search engine in the world that helps users access virtually everything that one would want to research on? According to Nielsen Online, facebook, twitter, and Myspace combined captured over hundred million users in 2009.
According to Nielsen therefore the gap between human beings virtual and physical continues to dim. It’s important however to understand that the problem is not sing the internet. Rather the problem is the activity these billions of users of the internet engage in. in a survey in 2005 by America Online and Salary.com, many workers over 44% cited the internet as the biggest distraction (Mahill 32).
The internet was fist invented to connect people. Today, it still plays that very important role. In fact, there is quite a lot of useful collaboration that is as a direct result of the internet. Take for example research (Johnson et al 54). Many research fellows in the world interact between each other stationed in different universities thousands of miles away exchanging ideas that have positively changed the world.
The internet is also increasingly being used as a place to discuss parties and other social events that bring many people together. Everyday the news media is filled with news of unsuspecting women and men some of them underage lured by criminals and trafficked to various parts of the world through the internet (Herbert and Samantha 59).
It’s hard for one to imagine his son /daughter being sent away from school because they posted inappropriate pictures online. Many politicians have lost their careers through the information thy post on the net. What we can decide from the above is that the internet is a great source of unlimited invaluable information and at the same time a place with unlimited ways of wasting time.
Many experts have asked themselves many questions about the good and bad sides of the internet. Much as they acknowledge its importance, it’s hard to remain objective and concentrate on the good side without casting the eye wide and seeing the ugly side of it (Katz and Rice, 45).
The internet was invented to connect with people, true. The internet is still crucial in everyday running of the world, true. On the other hand, the internet is the root of some of the bad evils that have befallen many people, true and the internet is the beginning of what Gibson described as a place to daydream waste time and watching other people’s lives while we destroy ours. According to Gibson, the bad side of the internet outweighs the good.
Putting oneself in Gibson’s shoes, one can’t help but ask some very hard questions about the net. What good is there for one to spend half of his/time discussing about the lives of other people? What good comes out of sitting the whole day, consuming vast amounts of energy and fantasizing about other people’s lives?
Alternatively, what good comes out of someone sitting the whole day creating malicious programs that lead to the collapse of vast networks of data and sometimes con of money out of people. It makes no sense at all for one to stay online and take surveys that pay a hundredth of a dollar. Millions of people are engaged in such activities that promise huge unrealistic incomes.
According to Gibson, uselessness stems from the fact people spend a lot of time online doing nothing productive on the internet. As a result the internet has introduced a culture of people who only think about leisure without working. While that can work ideally, it’s quite unworkable in the realistic world.
Even if the idea that money can work for one hence he/she can have all the time to engage in leisure was workable, it will still be impossible for one to engage in endless leisure. Gibson therefore feels that the advantages and disadvantages from the internet cancel out each other and result the nothing comes out of it. He further fears that failure to halt the trend will lead to people especially young people acting life and living in fantasy
The scary part is that the internet is yet to fully evolve to reach its epitome. The evolution no doubt will bring along numerous advantages and along with it deadly consequences for all users of the internet. What needs to answered however is whether the leisure trend that is associated with the world is on its way to usurping the productive trends that laid the foundation for the internet (John 76).
Many experts have expressed their own views that support Gibson’s view while others appear to be on the contrary. Ott and Sarricks believe most of the information stored in the internet can be justified to be useless.
The sad thing about it is that the information is packaged to appear important potentially misleading many people who otherwise should be engaged in productive activity (166). Gibson in his argument about the uselessness of the internet admits that though he likes surfing the internet and derives considerable pleasure from doing so, he cannot compare it to the television.
Television according to him is far more beneficial and apparently does not waste time like the internet, well during the “good old times”. Its difficult to determine the accuracy of the Gibson’s charge. However, anyone can find a number of faults with the TV as with the internet. Like surfing the internet, clicking on ones TV remote control will introduce to numerous unnecessary programs comparable to the useless information on the internet.
West admits that the internet has revolutionalized the way information is accessed (74). Information according to him that took weeks to compile may take a few hours. Now who can object to that as an great time saver? West adds that the wealth of information available in soft form online far outweighs the information that is available in soft copy (74). However, West faults the vast amounts of information on the internet as its main undoing.
Like Otts and Saricks he concurs that most of it is useless. Further more it will take someone a long time to sift through the information to com up with anything logical and concrete ( 25). The quality of the information has been called to question. Its no secret that most qualitative and useful intelligence information is sold online. So why avail it and claim at the same time that its available on the information superhighway.
According to Mahill, social interaction is very important it every human being’s life (130). Human beings have different interests and those that have less rely on the media for a bridge of the gap that5 the have. The internet has come in handy and kept people engaged instead of being bored.
That is pretty much like Gibson’s view. However, Mahill faults television, social media, e-mail, texting and texting all that have an internet element in them for providing too much entertainment to appoint where the individual is overwhelmed. He adds that people are finding it increasingly difficult to process the information and entertainment that the internet accords the (130). Mahill authoritatively declares that people are overloaded and the usefulness of the internet is drastically being put under the microscope.
He coinage “the internet is useless” is too blanket to sum up the benefits that the internet offers as well as the disadvantages. Depending on the angle from which it’s looked at, there are going to be a lot of pros and cons concerning the service. However, focusing on the disadvantages, it’s difficult to ignore the fact that the internet thing is quickly turning to an “overact”. There is a lot of entertainment on the net.
In fact, one can easily prove that there is over entrainment that exceeds supply on the internet. But, who said some people don’t like it? Are social sites minting money out of the net? Can from instance Larry Page of Google describe the internet as useless? The simple answer is no! Therefore, the solution lies in a little bit of policing of the net where stringent regulation will control what flows in and out of the net. Without that, am afraid Gibson’s generalization will become true.

The Positive and Negative Effects of the Internet on Our Daily Lives
Dave Devloper
Technology touches every aspect of our lives, from the way we communicate to the way we think and learn. The invention of the internet in the late ’60s has been instrumental in engineering the 24/7 information age. Due to the advances, learning has become more interactive, collaborative, and convenient. In the same breath, the introduction of innovative apps on the phones has increased access to information and awareness of issues such as health and finances. In the area of communication, the internet has given rise to email, social networking, and video conferencing. On the downside, the platform has received a lot of bad press lately due to privacy scandals, security breaches, cyber-bullying, cyber theft, child pornography, internet addiction, and the proliferation of fake news. Here’s an in-depth look at the positive and negative effects of the internet on our daily lives:
Boost connectivity
The internet is a global networking platform and the guiding light of today’s technology. Over 7 billion wireless device users use internet technology to perform various tasks. Due to its massive growth, gadgets like laptops, tablets, and smartphones have become commonplace. The US mobile internet patterns show people spend more time on their devices sending instant messaging, visiting social media sites, web browsing, and listening to music. Using instant messaging services and video calls, one can easily connect with family, friends, and acquaintances living thousands of miles away.
Enhanced communication
The emergence of the internet as a communication tool has had a multifarious effect. Most people use the platform for socializing, accessing information, and for career and commerce. Popular information includes political stories, health tips, and government services. Also, people across the world use social media Apps such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp to communicate with family and friends. The Apps are very engaging and easy to use. It takes only a few minutes to write and share a meaningful text. On top of these benefits, both small and large businesses can publish their information. With expanded internet access, you can easily find a pizza place, an automated car wash when on a road trip, a NOMOS authorized dealer near you when planning to buy a watch, and evidently everything else.
Promote education
The internet has made education more fun and convenient. Students can now access tons of study materials and video tutorials without breaking a sweat. With platforms like Google, you can ask any question and receive instant feedback. People interested in pursuing various careers and e-commerce are also turning to the internet to apply for jobs, attend online classes, and make payments remotely.
Social life problems
Studies show the internet has had a net positive impact on education but has been negative when it comes to morality and politics. Also, people who spend excessive amounts of time on social media platforms tend to be lonely and socially isolated. Excessive internet engagement can also impact self-esteem. A report published in 2017 indicates up to 60% of social media users reported suffering from negative self-esteem issues, while 80% said it was easier to be deceived by others using the information they share online.
Cybercrimes
The popularity of the internet has also attracted the attention of bad elements in society. Crimes that take place over and around the internet are described as cybercrimes. These crimes are often manifested through identity theft, phishing, fraud, and hacking. With these revelations, the dark web has become a popular platform to trade stolen data and materials. Other vices perpetrated over the internet include cyber-bullying, cyber-stalking, internet predation, child pornography, and spreading hate. Individual and corporate users also stand a risk of being attacked by computer viruses and ransomware. All these factors can lead to loss of money, valuable information, and damage to hardware infrastructure.
Developmental effects
The child’s normal growth and development can be impacted negatively by excessive internet use. And, this is mostly attributed to easy access to illegal or age-inappropriate materials. Studies show excessive internet use among children can negatively impact their attention span, critical reasoning, and language acquisition skills. Children addicted to mobile-supported games like video games may also be pushed to lead sedentary lifestyles and forgo healthy exercises and other outdoor activities. If left unchecked, extended screen time can also cause several health problems, including stress, chronic insomnia and feelings of anxiety in adults.
The emergence of the internet has made it possible for people to access tons of digitized information at their convenience. This has enhanced communication, improved business transactions, and expanded access to information. In the education space, students can work interactively and unrestricted without worrying about time and the usual physical constraints. Another critical development is the emergence of cultural globalization, which is quickly taking root as the conventional meaning of space, time, and distance becomes ever distorted. At the other end of the spectrum, the internet has made it easier for children to access unsuitable materials. Other cons include internet addiction and the proliferation of cyber-crimes.

The Internet's Good and Bad Sides Essay
1. the benefits of the internet.
be used for research, learning, and professional development. This access to information has revolutionized the way we learn and gather knowledge. Instead of relying solely on traditional sources such as books and encyclopedias, we can now find information on almost any topic with just a few clicks. Another advantage of the internet is its ability to connect people from all over the world. Through social media platforms, email, and instant messaging, we can easily communicate with friends, family, and colleagues regardless of their location. This has made the world a smaller place and has fostered global connections and collaborations. It has also allowed for the sharing of ideas, opinions, and experiences on a global scale. The internet has also made many tasks easier and more convenient. Online shopping has become increasingly popular, allowing people to purchase goods and services from the comfort of their own homes. Online banking has made managing finances more efficient and accessible. Additionally, the internet has opened up new opportunities for remote work and telecommuting, allowing people to work from anywhere with an internet connection. However, it is important to note that the internet also has its drawbacks. The abundance of information available online can sometimes be overwhelming and it can be difficult to determine the credibility and accuracy of sources. There are also concerns about privacy and security, as personal information can be easily accessed and exploited. It is crucial for individuals to be cautious and responsible when using the internet, and to be aware of the potential risks and dangers. In conclusion, the internet has greatly impacted our lives and has become an essential tool in today's society. Its ability to provide access to information, connect people, and simplify tasks has transformed the way we live, work, and communicate. However, it is important to use the internet responsibly and to be aware of its limitations and risks. With proper caution and understanding, the internet can continue to be a valuable resource for individuals and society as a whole.
1.1. Access to Information
Access to information on the internet is definitely one of the greatest advantages and benefits of using the internet. Whether it is information you need for work, education, or leisure, it is available on the internet. The internet is an incredibly powerful tool when used correctly and can help further your understanding of a specific topic. For example, let's say you had to write a short essay for your history class and the topic was about ancient Greece. Without the internet, you would have to resort to reading several books to hopefully understand and gather enough information to write a decent essay. Hoping to find correct and accurate information in books can sometimes be a hard task too. But with the internet, using search engines like Google, you can type in "ancient Greece" and millions of links will be available to you, providing some sort of information relating to your topic. With the internet, information can often be gathered more quickly as well. Another very good feature of the internet is that it has the capability to provide visual and audio information. A large portion of our society today has become visual learners and would prefer to see or hear something to understand it. In the past, the only real forms of visual information were pictures in books and videos. While reading about ancient Greece, with the internet, you might come across a documentary that could be downloaded and listened to, explaining the rise and fall of ancient Greece while comparing it to what can be read from a book. This can often be beneficial to some people, as with audio, they can simply sit back and relax while listening and not have to worry about reading and looking for the information. Videos are often a better source of information too but have limited availability, and a single video cassette can only store so much information. With new video sharing websites like YouTube, you can find all sorts of videos for just about anything, all for free. This can really help enhance your understanding and knowledge of a specific topic.
1.2. Communication and Connectivity
One of the major and most incredible benefits brought about by the internet is the means of communication. Communication is made much easier and faster these days, allowing people to contact others at any time and in any part of the world. Friends and families are able to keep in touch more cheaply and frequently. It is a great tool for those in long-distance relationships. Business companies are now able to hold meetings with the help of video conferencing, which saves time and reduces travel costs for the company. The internet offers various means of communication tools such as email, forums, chat, and most popularly used today is instant messaging. Using the internet to keep in touch with people, whether it be a simple hello or making an important business deal, has made communication using the internet vital in today's society. It has practically eliminated the cost of communication. Most tools available are free to use, such as email, instant messenger, and VoIP. Forums, for example, put many people into discussion on various topics and are permanent places of discussion for people from all over the world. Simulation games have produced virtual economies on the internet where players have their own businesses or so on, and the internet has been the only way of communication for some business deals in these games. As a computer science student, many assignments require online group discussion and meetings. All these scenarios involve groups of people, and the internet has provided a very effective means of communication at practically no cost. The use of the internet for communication is highly efficient, and in the generation of today, it has become a necessity.
1.3. Convenience and Efficiency
Convenience and efficiency, though they have appeared earlier before the internet, have latched on to the internet with the hooks. It seems these two have attached themselves to the internet in a most inseparable manner. To date, the internet is the most convenient and efficient source of retrieving data. Imagine a hot day, you are lazing around in your drawing room. You have an assignment to submit, but don't feel like getting up and going to the library. What do you do? You have it all available on the internet through web pages and email. Then there is information available on newsgroups which sometimes is more elaborate and to the point. Sometimes the prospect to download data and print it is exciting. For example, one may need information contained in an encyclopedia. It sure cannot be carried everywhere, and purchasing the entire set for a few bits of information is not worth it. So why not access a CD which contains the same, and incurs lesser cost. If that too is not acceptable, one can find it on the internet and it may even have a simpler explanation. Now obtaining the same information from an encyclopedia will require much more effort during the visit to a library and the individual may be sidetracked by looking at other topics. This way the internet actually saves time and energy. A new useful technology has been the varied multimedia and a two-way video conferencing. This is being readily applied to distance learning and proved to be a more effective method. This too can be archived for later play and has the benefit of anyone who had missed a live lecture. Schedule flexibility is the biggest advantage here. Then there are multimedia databases and extensive help on using the internet for further guidance on any topic. The internet has made a global impact by creating a means to translate from one language to another and there are many language translation sites now available. These are a few types of methods how the internet can prevent information blunders and assure to get the right thing at the right time.
2. The Drawbacks of the Internet
Overall, the internet has been a positive force, but there are a variety of drawbacks. In this section, these drawbacks will be further explored and defined. The first drawback is the online security risk. Shapiro (1999) states that "Crime and security are two of the principal negative impacts of the Internet on society." Online security will be discussed in terms of the several types of crime which have occurred, the various methods and tools users can employ to protect themselves and their data, and looking at some security issues and aspects in the future. The second drawback is a negative impact on social interaction. This is quite a broad topic as the internet affects social interaction in many ways. This section will discuss how the internet influences behavior, social awareness, the rules/norms for social interaction, and finally the web's effects on relationships and community. Information overload and distraction are another major drawback of the internet. With the incredible amount of information available, it is easy to become overwhelmed. This can be detrimental if quality information is not found and can lead to a loss of time and productivity. Information overload can also cause undue stress; people may feel they are not keeping up with the large volume of information being produced. This can lead to a sense of alienation from society. While the internet's primary role is to access and exchange information, the sheer amount of information available can detract from other activities and goals. A large proportion of internet users have experienced becoming side-tracked while browsing and ultimately not finding the desired information. This can be a significant waste of time, and the user may also become frustrated or confused.
2.1. Online Security Risks
A further flipside to using the internet and the computer is online security because the ease and speed of internet communications also makes security more important than ever before. When we are online, we are vulnerable to potential attacks from malicious individuals and software such as viruses, worms, spyware, and adware. These attacks can damage or delete data, steal personal information, intellectual property, money, and other assets. It is not only individuals who suffer from these attacks. Many organizations can be and have been targeted to disrupt their operations or steal valuable information. Although it may be impossible to create an absolutely secure computer system, the best way to counteract potential attacks is to be well informed and prepared. This can be done by installing and using security programs or through understanding what possible security threats may be and learning to avoid them. An understanding of potential security threats is important for all people who use the computer and the internet, from children and casual users to IT professionals. Although there are many potential online security risks, they can be classified into 8 main types: online identity theft, online predators, online crime, computer virus and other malicious software attacks, hacking, phishing, and fraud, and lastly non-consensual distribution of private sexual images or recordings.
2.2. Negative Impact on Social Interaction
Loneliness, isolation, and depression. No, this is not a new debilitating disease. These three things are the effects of the internet on the social life of an individual. It is little wonder that we are now seeing a sharp decrease in the number of young people who truly enjoy being out and about. From a simple trip to the store to a night out on the town living it up loco style, the internet has effectively made staying at home the better alternative. Why go outside and do something when you can sit around and waste the hours away in front of a computer screen? And the scary thing is, most people do not even see an issue with it. There's entire generations now, growing up with the internet being seen as an essential part of life. The thought of living even a single day without it is incomprehensible to some. The internet has done what's no small feat, it has reprogrammed basic human behavior. The concept of socializing with another human being face to face has shifted to one of chat programs and internet forums. These days, people are more likely to keep in touch over the internet than to actually go out and see the other person. In the working world, this often results in people doing the "boring stuff" over the internet so that they do not have to venture far from their homes. The thought of what effect this may have on future generations is a worrying one. What will the world be like when the internet is no longer a tool but a lifestyle?
2.3. Information Overload and Distraction
Discussions that the internet will provide a better way to access knowledge and information have a strong ground to defend their point. Nowadays, we can get any information with just a click. Search engines such as Google or Yahoo are at our service on the internet. But when we talk about the "too much access to the information," then that is a different story. Having excessive knowledge can be harmful for us. The distracting effects caused by the overwhelming information can affect our ability to concentrate on completing a task. We might end up spending too much time on an assignment searching for more information as we think that it is not enough, and by doing that, we procrastinate the time for other important tasks. This will eventually lead to a negative outcome on our job. Rise in technology and the easy access to the internet has caused the youngest generation to be victims of information overload and distraction. Children nowadays rely mostly on doing school work from the internet as they can easily get more information than from referring to books. They are exposed to different types of information such as knowledge, music, videos, and chatting with friends. As information is infinite, children get overwhelmed when researching for a simple task and end up doing other stuff, which leads to procrastination. This will affect their studies and jobs in the future. Videos and online games are also very detrimental to children as they tend to spend a lot of time on them. This will prevent them from doing more important tasks, and video games can create addiction in children, causing them to keep wanting to play them. This will distract them from studies or work.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet
Online education, communication, cyberbullying.
The invention of the Internet has changed the lives of numerous people across the globe. With the benefits offered by the Internet, there are several drawbacks, and society continuously debates whether performing different activities online is good or bad. The Internet provides substantial advantages in terms of virtual education and more efficient communication, and such edges overcome potential drawbacks, like cyberbullying, due to increasing society’s productivity.
The first benefit of the Internet is the advancement of the learning process. Online education is a convenient, flexible, and cost-effective way of obtaining knowledge (Dung, 2020). Attending classes via the Internet allows students to learn at their own pace when they have time and does not require spending resources on traveling to school or university. Virtual education also aids instructors and academic facilities (Yuhanna et al., 2020). With the help of the Internet, teachers have more time to balance their work and private life, while colleges and other institutions can reach more students. Therefore, the Internet makes learning more efficient for pupils and educators.
Another benefit of the Internet is allowing people to interact with each other better. Different online platforms provide individuals with an opportunity to communicate more efficiently (Sumter & Vandenbosch, 2019). On the Internet, those who are shy or introverted can express their thought more easily. Moreover, social media give friends and families a chance to enhance their relationships (Rosenfeld et al., 2019). Online networks allow people to communicate frequently without being constrained by time or place. Therefore, the Internet can advance existing and new interactions among individuals.
On the other hand, the Internet has a considerable disadvantage. In particular, using social media can have negative effects due to cyberbullying. The Internet has moved traditional school bullying to online platforms (Chun et al., 2020). Nowadays, teenagers often utilize the Internet to intimidate or oppress their peers anonymously. Furthermore, cyberbullying is considered to be a significant public health issue (Zhu et al., 2021). Being mistreated by their counterparts may adversely affect the mental health of young individuals. Accordingly, the Internet has a noteworthy drawback for the youthful generation.
To summarize, such benefits of the Internet as virtual education and enhanced communication, are likely to outweigh such disadvantages as cyberbullying. While online oppression is a significant problem, its impacts on teenagers can be managed by adults. Nonetheless, the Internet has improved society’s productivity by making it easier for shy people to communicate, for families to maintain their relationships, and for students to learn more efficiently.

The internet is a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil. It is up to each individual how they choose to use the internet. Disadvantages of the internet include feeding addictions, wasting time, and risking personal safety. Advantages of the internet include up to the minute news, research at your fingertips, and contact with friends and family who live far away.
One disadvantage of the internet is that it feeds addictions such as gambling. Websites exist where people can play poker and bet real money. Often, the people using these websites are addicted to gambling and cannot afford to lose money.
Another addiction fueled by the internet is shopping. It is so easy to shop at millions of stores online with just a click of the mouse. In minutes, people spend entire paychecks shopping online. EBay, Amazon, and Overstock.com are just a few examples shopping websites.
Surveys show that many people admit to spending hours online each day. Some people stay up most of the night on the internet. This is a disadvantage when people need to work the next day. These individuals either miss work or perform poorly at work due to the lack of sleep.
Another disadvantage is that with the amount of personal information online, it is becoming easier for the wrong people to locate your information online. Stalkers, ex-spouses, ex-girlfriends, or ex-boyfriends can easily find your address and telephone number online free or by using a paid background check website. This endangers personal safety when the person locating your information has a history of violence against you.
The internet updates news sources constantly. This is an advantage for those who enjoy keeping up with the latest news. The internet is the fastest way to keep up on the news. The internet often has news before television, radio, and the newspapers. Examples of reputable websites include ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN.
Another advantage of the internet is the wide availability of research. Individuals research on the internet for a variety of reasons. Some may need research for a school project, personal knowledge, or for their job. Research is available on many topics including diseases, history, law, and education. It is best to use reputable websites such as scholarly journals, government databases, and professional journals. These websites contain information from experts in the field you are researching.
Websites that accept contributions by users such as About.com and Wikipedia are not reliable as anyone can contribute to these websites and the contributors may not be legitimate experts. The information provided on these sites may not be accurate and then you risk a poor grade on an assignment for not having correct information. If you use nonprofessional websites after graduation in a major project at work, your career may suffer, as you will appear unable to conduct research.
Technology such as webcams, social networking sites, and instant messaging allow friends and families who live across the country or across the world from each other keep in contact in real time if both parties are logged in at the same time. When families are separated, this is a convenient way to keep in touch.
Analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the internet will assist me in making wise use of the internet in the future. I will try to set my security settings on social websites to private, keep track of how much time I spend on the internet, and monitor myself so that I do not become addicted to the internet or develop unhealthy spending habits on the internet. I will make sure I use reputable research sites such as those available through my college library, to educate myself on current events, and to keep in touch with my family members living far away. Analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of a topic will help me make good decisions in the future. Examples where decision analysis can help me include which classes to take, which job offer I should accept, and where I should live. This critical thinking exercise taught me how to look at an issue from all sides.
