GENERAL ADMISSIONS

How do i become a “competitive” applicant.

Admissions look at every candidate holistically. They will be looking at your clinical experiences, grades, personal statements, resume, and letter of recommendation! You want to ensure you’re strong in every category - grades are not the only aspect that matters.

If you are invited to the proctored essay, they will additionally take consideration of how you answer your essay and solve the three dosage calculation questions.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PREREQUISITES AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE VS. COURSES TAKEN AT UW?

The UW doesn’t prefer one over the other! This is largely based on the individual’s preference. Community colleges are often cheaper and provide smaller classroom sizes.

IS CLINICAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO APPLY? DOES IT HAVE TO BE CNA EXPERIENCE?

Clinical experience is not required for the 2025 application, although this does not mean overall healthcare experience is not required. You will need 100 hours of healthcare experience within a 3-month span to be qualified as an application for UWSON. With that being said, the admissions committee highly recommends gaining experience that strengthens and highlights your understanding of the nurse role. This can be taken in the form of volunteering, work, or shadowing a nurse. CNA experience is oftentimes recommended because you are closely working with nurses and carry out similar tasks.

If you cannot obtain clinical experience, we recommend looking at your non-clinical experiences and reflect on core skills that will support you as a nurse (time management, critical thinking, communication etc.).

HOW COMPETITIVE IS UW SCHOOL OF NURSING? 

As of September 2024, the UW School of Nursing undergraduate program tied for No.4 in the nation, according to the U.S. News & World Report . Application cycles are offered once per year with cohort sizes averaging around 80 students. Accepted BSN applicant GPAs range from 2.4 to 4.0, but please keep in mind that your GPA is only one of many factors in admissions decisions.

WHAT SHOULD MY BULLET POINTS IN MY RESUME HIGHLIGHT?

For healthcare experience, you want your bullets to show that you know what a nurse does. Focus on starting bullets with “observed nurse…/assisted nurse…” to include the nursing skills you witnessed. For community service/involvement, you want to choose experiences different from your healthcare experience to represent your community involvement. This doesn’t have to be traditional volunteer work. You want to show how you’re involved in your communities and if you delve into cultures/communities different from your own. These experiences could help you with your essay as well. For leadership/teaching experiences, add bullets that describe your role as a leader/teacher and also describe your teaching/leadership style. Do you make others feel heard? Do you collaborate with coworkers and clients to create the best outcomes? Give examples that show how you function as a leader.

WHAT EXPERIENCES SHOULD YOU PRIORITIZE?

Prioritize your most recent, as well as most pertinent experiences. Although there is no limitation to how far back your experiences can come from, your more recent experiences will probably better reflect who you are today.

WHAT EXPERIENCES ARE VALUABLE TO ADMISSIONS?

All experiences are valuable - what brings them value is what you learned from them. Focus on experiences that made you reflect the most on your values, biases, and perspective. For healthcare experiences specifically, you should prioritize experiences where you worked directly with an RN.

WHAT SHOULD I WRITE IN MY OPTIONAL STATEMENT?

Use your optional statement to supplement any part of your application that you think needs explanation. For example, if you had a quarter with poor grades because you were having a mental health crisis, this would be where you explain that. Other things you can include are your personal social determinants of health or obstacles of any kind you had to overcome to get where you are today. This section is yours - no prompts. Use it to your advantage to allow the reviewing team to see you more holistically.

WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM LOOK LIKE?

The BSN program is 2 years long. The curriculum includes lecture-based courses, smaller lab sections for hands-on learning, nurse/patient simulation scenarios, and clinical rotations. Clinical rotations include Medical-Surgical, Community Health, Psychiatric, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Labor & Delivery, and a final practicum rotation.

A nursing proctored essay is whereby you are given an essay topic to write about within a specified period, and the proctor watches over you as you write the essay. The time given can range from one to two hours, depending on the nursing school or program.

The essay topics are very diverse and range from leadership to ethics. They are not necessarily textbook questions, but they seek to understand how you can interpret a particular case in a specified situation.

Below is a guide on how to write an impressive nursing proctored essay that will leave an impact on the reader and influence the nursing school’s decision to favor your admission.

Purpose of a Nursing Proctored Essay

Nursing essays have different topics, and you can be asked to ask about various issues in healthcare or about yourself and your future nursing career.

Some of the nursing proctored essay topics include transferable skills, tolerance for stress, motivational fitness, communication, personal values, and diversity .

These essays seek to establish your use of language, grammar, spelling, organization, and proper structuring of paragraphs. The essays also seek to confirm whether you have a good understanding of the topics.

The essays are proctored because they want to determine if the applicant can write well. The nursing school also wants to establish if you have a good command of the English language because communication is essential in nursing practice.

Tips for Writing a Great Nursing Proctored Essay

1.    planning.

This is a crucial step; plan before you start writing a nursing proctored essay. The idea is to develop an outline with your ideas or thoughts that you want to include in the essay.

2.    Thesis Statement

The essay should include a thesis statement that will capture the key argument for the response. The thesis statement is mostly included in the last part of the introduction paragraph.

The thesis statement must be coherent and concise and should give a sound introduction to your entire response.

3.    Proctored Essay Structure

The nursing proctored essay must follow the fundamental rules of grammar and format . It must have a well-established introduction, body, and conclusion.

You should also ensure that you have a good transition from one paragraph to another in the essay’s body. You should also pay attention to grammar and word choice.

Lastly, proofread the essay to ensure that there are no punctuation errors in the paper. Use punctuation marks, commas, and conjunctions appropriately.

4.    Content

The nursing proctored essay must provide a detailed response to the question asked. You should not state assumptions but acknowledge the facts related to the topic. Make the response prompt and avoid any irrelevant details.

For instance, the essay topic can ask you about your ability to be a leader as a nurse. In this case, you should delve into your values, principles, and the leadership abilities that you possess and how you can translate them into the workplace.

5.    Point of View 

Ensure that you write your nursing proctored essay at the right point of view. Ideally, a third person voice is ideal for the benefit of the readers in the nursing school as appropriate.

If the prompt is asking you to write about your personal life, then you should write in the first person. You should never use the second person when writing a nursing proctored essay.

6.    Formal Tone

Ensure that the tone in your nursing proctored essay is more scholarly and less conversational. Revise the style to ensure that it is formal.

Improper punctuation, misspellings, and sentence fragments indicate that the essay is poorly conceived or written carelessly.

Evaluating a Nursing Proctored Essay

The evaluation of a nursing essay adopts the following criteria:

Organization

Ideally, a persuasive essay is divided into three segments, including the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The article should be organized in a manner that the thoughts flow from one point to another.

A quality essay is coherent, concise, clear, and devoid of errors in word use, punctuation, and grammar . Go through the essay to ensure that it has a good flow without any mistakes.

A persuasive essay provides accurate responses to the topic and supports generalizations with accurate and ample facts, examples, and details. It should also include relevant nursing terminology.

UW Seattle 2021 ABSN

Hi everyone! I was wanting to start a forum for those of us applying to the ABSN program at the University of Washington for Fall 2021. It would be cool to get to know some applicants especially with COVID 19 as a huge factor in our academics and health care experience. I graduated this Spring from UW Seattle with my degree in Medical Anthropology and Global health with a minor in gender women, and sexualities studies. My overall undergrad GPA was a 3.35 and my natural world GPA is around a 3.5. I’ve been working as a med tech and caregiver at an assisted living facility since March with direct care with covid 19 patients. I also have experience volunteering in guatamela for over a month a few years ago, and have conducted research at UW on indigenous centered care. I also plan on applying to the early admissions to DNP for midwifery! Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Hi! thanks for starting the forum and yes as you said these are such unsettling times I am glad we have this space to support each other. I also plan on applying to the ABSN and was contemplating also applying for the early entry DNP since I really want to end up as a Nurse-Midwife. But I am not sure if I am a good candidate since I don't have any practical experience in birthing centers. Do you know if they look for that specifically for the DNP?

I graduated this May from McGill University with a double major in Gender studies and Psychology with a CGPA of 3.5. Have experience as a daycare infant teacher, EMT , and 2 international internships in hospitals from a couple of years ago.

Hi, thank you for starting this post! I am also applying this year. I have my BA in Human Development and Psychology with a cumulative GPA of 3.68. My NW GPA is 3.69. I've been working as a CNA for six years, the last four of which I worked in a Progressive Care Unit of two different hospitals. I'm a little concerned that my Community Involvement on my resume is weak. I really don't have a lot to put there. My SO is in the military and we move around a lot so I don't tend to do a whole lot other than work. I've done some fundraising in part of a committee at one of my previous jobs so I'll include that, but that is pretty much it. I tried to find volunteer opportunities at the last minute but struggled due to COVID.

Hi everyone! I'll also be applying to the ABSN program for next fall! I am just about to graduate from UC Davis with a degree in biological sciences. My cumulative GPA is a 3.94 and my NW GPA is 3.96! I have interned at my local hospital in the neurological surgery department and am now a personal caregiver for adults with developmental disabilities in my community. I also run and compete with my school's club cross country team!

COVID has definitely been a struggle for obtaining more healthcare experience, and I'm curious to see how it affects this round of application cycles.

I am still finishing up some pre-req courses but as of now my NW GPA is a 4.0. I have traveled to Tanzania, Puerto Rico, and the Brazilian Amazon participating in community development, education, food security, and hurricane relief projects. I also have research experience in a synthetic organic Chemistry lab. I am excited to begin my nursing career, hopefully at UW!! Are you guys applying to other schools? Oh WOW! a couple of my friends also go to SMC! UW seems pretty competitive compared to the other schools I’m applying to (Samuel Merritt, Loyola Chicago, Linfield, and CSU Northridge) but it’s definitely my #1! The app has been okay, I’m mostly just nervous for the proctored essay!

Yes, I applied for the 21/22 ABSN cohort. I am graduating from Western Washington University next quarter with a bachelors in human services.  The proctored essay wasn’t so bad! What did you all think? I wonder if we all had the same essay prompt. I’m nervous and excited to see if I will be offered a spot in the program!

I currently live in Bellingham, WA, and I have a family, so I will combine commuting, with some nights spent in Seattle. I’m thinking of renting a room, or something simple like that.

hi everyone! I am so nervous since we are getting closer and closer. does anyone have an update on when we are supposed to hear back? I know its typically mid December, but I wasn't sure if they are still on track with that timeline. 

I was definitely surprised by the proctored essay question and had to take a minute to gather my thoughts. I am pretty nervous about it, I am not sure if I interpreted the prompt correctly. Just trying to stay positive!!

I’m nervous too. For the essay I thought we’d be asked about hypothetical care situations. So I’m hoping I did OK. I have it in my head that they said dec 15 but I can’t find that anywhere so I may be incorrect.
