How to Get Homework Done when You Don't Want To

Homework can be a drag, but it's got to be done to keep your grades up and stay on track during school. Going somewhere quiet, making a plan, and giving yourself breaks can all help you stay focused and on task to get your work done quickly. Try to keep your assignments organized and give yourself credit for completing hard or boring work, even if you didn’t want to.

Getting Motivated

Step 1 Pick an easy assignment to start with.

  • Keep a list of your assignments and check them off as you finish them. This can give you a sense of accomplishment that can motivate you to keep going.

Step 2 Work on your homework with your friends to keep each other motivated.

  • Make it the rule that you work for a certain amount of time, or until a certain amount of work has been accomplished. Afterward, you can hang out. Stick to this schedule.
  • Try this out and see if it works. If you're too distracted by having friends around, make a date to hang out after homework instead.

Step 3 Make completing assignments a competition with yourself.

  • Make sure you keep the competition to yourself. Competing with your friends isn’t fun, especially over homework assignments and grades.

Step 4 Understand why you’re doing homework so it doesn’t feel pointless.

  • Learning something that will probably help with future assignments, even if you don't know what they are yet.
  • Proving to your teacher that you understand the homework so that they don’t keep assigning it over and over.
  • Improving your GPA.
  • Getting a good grade.

Step 5 Reward yourself when you finish an assignment.

  • Try not to reward yourself with food, as that can lead to snacking when you aren’t really hungry.

Staying Focused

Step 1 Break your work up into 45-minute chunks.

  • For instance, tell yourself that if you finish your first assignment in 20 minutes, you can go on your phone for 5 minutes.

Step 2 Take 15-minute breaks.

  • Make sure you stand up and do something when it's your break, or you won't get your wiggles out.
  • Set a timer on your phone or use a kitchen timer to let yourself know when it's time to switch tasks.

Step 3 Incorporate your own interests into your assignments.

  • If you don't have control over the subject, try to find connections between the topic and something you care about. Find aspects of the subject that interest you.
  • For instance, if you have to study History but you care the most about fashion, investigate the styles of the times and places you are studying. Learn how political and economical developments changed the way people dressed.

Step 4 Listen to soothing music that isn’t distracting.

  • You can find playlists on Spotify and YouTube that are made for studying and doing homework.

Step 5 Turn off any entertainment when it’s time to focus on the hard stuff.

  • When you're struggling to focus, sign out of your email and all social media so you don't check them as a reflex.

Creating Good Study Habits

Step 1 Set up a dedicated workspace.

  • If you have many textbooks and worksheets, stack them and put them to the side.
  • Get things like pencils, erasers, calculators, rulers, and paper.

Step 2 Keep a homework planner.

  • Having a planner will make it less tempting to procrastinate, as long as you have broken up your studying into manageable chunks.
  • Your planner can be paper, or you can get one on your phone. Just make sure it has space for task lists as well as events.
  • Once you have completed a task, cross it off or put a check next to it. Seeing that you're getting your work done will make you feel better, which in turn will motivate you to keep up the good work.
  • Don't put more than you can do in one day on a list! Split up your week's work so that every day has a manageable amount.

Step 3 Stick to a weekly homework routine.

  • If you have a job or extracurricular activities that change your daily schedule, determine a weekly schedule that you stick to as much as possible.

Step 4 Get help with your homework if you’re struggling.

  • Sometimes just explaining what you have to do will help you understand it better.
  • Talking to another person is a great way to brainstorm ideas. They may ask you questions or provide comments that can help you organize your ideas.
  • Other times, the person you are talking to will notice something about the prompt that you overlooked.

Hello, I´d like to learn if it is correct to say: 1) When we come home, we´ll do our homework. 2) After we come home, we´ll do our homework. Are both ok? Do they mean the same thing? Thank you.

boozer said: Both are strange things to say, especially the second one. As if some parent is urging them to do their homework before they come home, or even on their way home. But they are grammatical otherwise... Click to expand...

(Reply to post no. 3) "As soon as I get home, I'll do my homework" / "I'll do my homework as soon as I get home."

'When we get home, we'll do our homework' sounds fine. It doesn't explicitly state 'as soon as', but I think it's implicit. 'After' and 'come' don't sound so good.

"I will have done it" or "I will have it done"?

"I will have done it" or "I will have it done"? What's the difference? I found that future perfect sentence structure is:

Subject + will have + 3rd form of verb or past participle + object

( http://www.studyandexam.com/future-perfect-tense.html ) but I often hear "I will have it done". Which one is the correct form? Maybe both?

Both are correct.

The first sentence states that by an undefined time you yourself will have performed a certain task.

The second sentence states that you are undertaking to ensure that the task is performed, even if you don't do it yourself.

  • And if task can be performed only by me? Like "I will have finished my project by then"? Is "I will have my project finished by then" incorrect? –  k_wit Commented Aug 31, 2016 at 17:42

The first sentence ( I WILL HAVE DONE IT) is Future perfect . as you mentioned the structure is SUBJECT + WILL + HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE.

but the second is simple future of passive causative .

if you read about causative, you will see that we have some verbs like (MAKE, GET,HAVE) that we can use in both active and passive forms to talk about an action when the action itself is the point of our sentence not necessarily the doer.

let me help you with giving an example of SIMPLE PRESENT TO CAUSATIVE first, then we change it to FUTURE so you may be less confused.

ACTIVE: I have my mother do my homework.

PASSIVE: I have my homework done ( by my mother) --> in this form the doer is not important. it can even be you.

now if I shift the tense of these two sentences to FUTURE they will be:

ACTIVE: I will have my mother do my homework.

PASSIVE: I will have my homework done (by my mother)

I wish you find it useful. :)

  • Yes, thank you,. –  Colin Fine Commented Jul 23, 2020 at 21:19

I think putting it into context makes the difference:

Person A: "I need [something] done by lunchtime." Person B: "I will have it done by then."

Implies that Person B had not necessarily planned to complete the task by lunchtime, but now will because Person A has explicitly asked.

Person A: "I need [something] done by lunchtime." Person B: "I will have done it by then."

Implies Person B would have completed the task by lunchtime regardless of Person A's statement.

Both are correct but, depending on the situation, one may not be appropriate.

The former response from Person B is submissive; Person A could be an employer giving an instruction to an employee, who confirms that the instruction will be carried out. The latter response could be seen as dismissive; Person B is stating that the instruction is redundant. Some employers may regard the latter as flippant, as if Person B feels he/she doesn't need to be given instructions.

Alternatively, the order of the words could be used to stress the importance of 'it' being 'done':

Person A: "I will help you do it tonight." Person B: "I will have done it by then!"

If you change the response to 'have it done' it feels less powerful.

11 Better Ways to Say “I Will Do My Best” (Formal Email)

“I will do my best” is used when you’ve been set a task and want to give it your best effort. It might not be the most appropriate phrase for a formal email, though. This article will explore how to say “I will do my best” in a professional way.

Other ways to say “I will do my best” are “I will get it done,” “I will get to work,” and “I’ll do what I can.” These synonyms are confident. “I will do my best” doesn’t, but “I will get it done” shows that you will put everything into it.

Better Ways to Say I Will Do My Best

1. I Will Get It Done

“I will get it done” is a great alternative that shows you are confident and sure you’ll get the work finished. It’s a great way to let someone know that they can trust you and your work.

  • Dear Abbie,
  • I will get it done. I’ll let you know as soon as I’ve finalized most of the original plans for this piece.
  • All the best,
  • Dear Edward,
  • I will get it done. I won’t wait around any longer. I’ll let you know when there’s some progress on my end.
  • Dear Jason,
  • I will get it done. Thank you for letting me prove myself to you. I’ll show you that I’m more than ready for the job.
  • Kind regards,

2. I Will Get to Work

“I will get to work” is another confident way to accept a new challenge or task. Using “I will” in this manner shows that you are convinced you have the capacity to complete the job.

  • Dear Mathew,
  • I will get to work. You will hear back from me over the next few days to let you know how I’m getting on.
  • Dear Shane,
  • I will get to work at once. I want to ensure I put my best effort into this. When is this needed by?
  • Dear Brooke,
  • I will get to work immediately. I’m sure we can come to an arrangement that works well for both of us.

3. I’ll Do What I Can

“I’ll do what I can” is a little less confident, but it’s still a good alternative. It shows that you’ll try your hardest to complete a new assignment, even if you “can’t” do certain things because of a limited skill set.

  • Dear David,
  • I’ll do what I can. Let me know if there’s anything else I should know about before taking on this project.
  • Dear Melissa,
  • I’ll do what I can. There should be no reason for me to email you again until I’ve completed this task.
  • Dear Michael,
  • I’ll do what I can. I’m sure I have everything I need already to ensure this goes well.

4. I’ll Figure It Out

“I’ll figure it out” is a more informal synonym, but you can use it if you’re close to your boss. It shows that you’ll come up with a plan to complete the task for them.

  • Dear George,
  • I’ll figure it out and get back to you. I have a few ideas that should work quite well to help fix these issues.
  • Dear Samantha,
  • I’ll figure it out for you. I appreciate you coming to me to ask for help. I’m sure I’ll be able to do the best work.
  • Dear Travis,
  • I’ll figure it out. Let me know if I should be made aware of anything else before starting with these tasks.

5. I’m Happy to Help

“I’m happy to help” shows that you’re eager to do the work given to you. It shows that you’re happy to do whatever it takes to please the recipient asking for help.

  • Dear Thomas,
  • I’m happy to help. Would you like anything else from me before I start working on these projects?
  • Dear Ms. Smith
  • I’m happy to help. Is there anything else I can do for you while I’m here?
  • Dear Sarah,
  • I’m happy to help. I’m glad you came to me and trusted me with this information. I won’t let you down.

6. I’ll See What I Can Do

“I’ll see what I can do” is a less confident synonym, but it still works well. You should use it to show that you might not have the correct skills for the job. Nevertheless, you’ll still try to get it done.

  • I’ll see what I can do. If there is anything else I need from you, I’ll contact you again.
  • I’ll see what I can do. In the meantime, please be patient. I’ll try and get the project completed in time to help you.
  • I’ll see what I can do about this. I think it’s wise that we figure out a game plan now before moving forward.

7. I’ll Do Whatever I Can

“I’ll do whatever I can” is another good alternative showing that you might not have the appropriate skills. You can still use this phrase to show confidence, even if you’re not sure whether you can complete the task.

  • I’ll do whatever I can. Let me know before I get to work if you want to share anything else.
  • Dear Katherine,
  • I’ll do whatever I can. I have a good plan in place and am ready to go. It should make things much easier for me to figure out.
  • Dear Virginia,
  • I’ll do whatever I can. I want to make this as easy as possible to help you out. Thank you for trusting me.

8. I’ll Be Sure to Get This Done

“I’ll be sure to get this done” is a great way to show that you’ll get around to the task set for you. It shows confidence and enthusiasm. It also shows that you might be quite busy, so you need to sort your schedule out before working on something new.

  • Dear Ms. Lambert,
  • I’ll be sure to get this done. If there’s anything else I need to know, please don’t hesitate to contact me again.
  • Dear Kerry,
  • I’ll be sure to get this done. I want to help you however I can, and I appreciate you coming to me.
  • Dear Jamie,
  • I’ll be sure to get this done. Is there anything else I should know before moving forward?

9. I’ll Let You Know When I’ve Done It

“I’ll let you know when I’ve done it” is a confident alternative for accepting a new task. It shows that you will work on it, and you expect the next email you send to the recipient to say that you’ve completed the task.

  • Dear Nicola,
  • I’ll let you know when I’ve done it. I should be able to update you later in the week when I have more information.
  • Dear Nathan,
  • I’ll let you know when I’ve done it. I want to make this go as smoothly as possible to help you.
  • Dear Mr. Knock,
  • I’ll let you know when I’ve done it. I should have it ready before the deadline, but I’ll let you know if something goes wrong.

10. I’ll Give It My All

“I’ll give it my all” shows that you’ll put in as much energy as physically possible. This shows someone that you’re willing to do everything to help them, even if you’re not the best fit.

  • Dear Brian,
  • I’ll give it my all. I want to make things right, and I’m certain I’ll be able to get this done for you.
  • Dear Perry,
  • I’ll give it my all. Is there anything else I should know before I continue with the project work?
  • Dear Jackson,
  • I have a few ideas that should make this project much easier to figure out. I’ll give it my all. Bear with me.

11. I Won’t Let You Down

“I won’t let you down” is a great phrase to show that you will do what it takes to please the recipient. It’s a good choice if you are confident that you will be able to help complete a project.

  • Dear Marco,
  • I won’t let you down. I know I’m the right woman for the job, and I’ll show you what I can do.
  • Dear Tyler,
  • I won’t let you down. I have a few ideas already, so it should be easy for me to figure all of this out.
  • Dear Kamala,
  • I won’t let you down. Is there anything else you need from me before I get to work?

Is It OK to Say “I Will Do My Best”?

“I will do my best” is a good phrase, but it’s not very confident . Most people avoid using it in formal emails because it shows that you’ll “try” rather than “do.”

In a formal situation, it’s best to be confident in yourself. The more you believe in your capabilities, the more respect you will get from people asking you to help them.

That’s why “I will do my best” doesn’t work well in a formal email. You have to be more confident in your abilities when trying to impress someone over an email.

How to Get Your Homework Finished When You Don’t Get Home Until 8pm

Here’s how get your homework finished.

We live in an active, busy, on-the-go, never-stopping, hyper-connected world. Students are perhaps busier now than they have ever been before.

Take one student of ours for example. This guy took one of our study skills courses and was a big-shot high school hockey player. He had division one type talent, possibly even professional talent eventually.

But here’s the downside to being an insanely committed athlete: it takes a ton of time.

This student had to travel a long way every day for practice. We’re in North Carolina, after all, so you can’t exactly find an ice rink at every corner. In fact, his hockey schedule meant he had to leave the house every morning before 7 am, but he didn’t get home until after 8 pm.

If you live that kind of life, how do you actually keep your grades up?

If you know a student who has this kind of restricting schedule, try one of these tips below to still live an on-the-go lifestyle and keep the grades up.

1. Get your homework finished by using throw-away time

This is a concept we teach guys to employ in our study skills course for guys , The Dudes’ Guide to Study Skills. It has direct implications for every student.

Get Big Chunks of Time

In years past students could expect to leave school, head home, and then get big chunks of time together that would allow them to finish all their homework at one time. Those days are becoming fewer and farther between.

Today’s students frequently don’t find themselves in situations that allow them 2 hour blocks of time together. Instead, get creative and use the “throw-way” time blocks. Do you take the bus? Do you have to wait for Mom or Dad to make dinner? Do you ride in the car for 15 minutes? All of those “throw-away” time blocks can add up to a big difference when it comes to getting your homework finished.

get your homework finished

2. Get your homework finished by staying super organized

Some folks aren’t the biggest fan of this concept. organization is the bane of many students’ existence..

But it’s frequently the difference between students making use of shortened blocks of homework time or missing out on those blocks. If you are not organized, you’re not going to be able to start and stop homework quickly.

The key to staying super organized in this way, however, is that you need every homework assignment that has not yet been finished in one place. This can be a folder, or a binder, or a pocket in a binder. But keep it all in one place, and keep that folder with you all the time.

3. Get your homework finished by cutting out distractions

Technology and other distractions (but mostly technology) are usually the biggest factor keeping students from getting their homework done on time. Finish your homework. Then enjoy the tech.

We love technology. We just don’t love it when you’re trying to get your homework finished. We’ve seen technology literally double, triple, quadruple — or worse — your homework time. When it’s homework time, shut it down. If you want to, you can take breaks every hour and check your social media . But give it a rest for a bit. Trust us – it’s an easy way to make sure you’re making the most of your time.

Do you have other suggestions? We’d love to hear what you have to say on social media.

Complete the Conditional Sentences (Type III ) by putting the verbs into the correct form.

1. If you (study ) ………………………… for the test, you (pass ) ……………………………it.

3. If you (speak ) …………………………… English, she (understand) ……………………… ………………… .

5. If it (not/ start ) …………………………… to rain, we (walk ) ………………………………..to the museum.

6. If she (take ) …………………………. the bus, she (not / arrive ) ……………………………… ……………… on time.

A conditional sentence describes a condition that is necessary for a particular outcome to occur.
The conjunctions if, even if, when, whenever, whether, and unless often appear in conditional
sentences. The meaning of a conditional sentence determines which verb tenses need to be used
in the independent and subordinate clauses.

Used to express a general or habitual fact.
In this case, the present
simple tense is used in both clauses.

– General fact: If I touch an ice cube, it feels cold.
– Habitual fact: Whenever I touch an ice cube, it feels cold.

Used to make predictions about the future or to express future
intentions or possibilities. In this case, the verb in the subordinate clause is in the
present tense, and the main verb in the independent clause is preceded by “will” or
another modal verb (might, should, may, etc.).

– Intention: If I win the lottery, I will go to Paris.
– Possibility: If I win the lottery, I might go to Paris.

Used to speculate about the future result of a possible, yet
unlikely, present condition. In this case, the verb in the subordinate clause is in simple
past tense, and the main verb in the independent clause is preceded by the modal would,
could, or might.

– Speculation: If I won the lottery, I would go to Paris.
The Past Subjunctive can also be used to speculate about the future result of a condition
that is not true in the present. In this case, the simple past-tense verb “were” is used in the
subordinate clause, and the main verb in the independent clause is preceded by the modal
would, could, or might.
– Speculation: If I were Prime Minister, I would do a great job.
– Speculation: If I were going to Paris, I would bring my passport.

Used to speculate about the past result of a condition that did
not happen in the past. In this case, the verb in the subordinate clause is in past perfect
tense; the main verb in the independent clause is a past participle, preceded by the modal
would have, could have, or might have.

– Speculation: If I had won the lottery, I would have gone to Paris.

It is also possible to express the conditional without
using the word if by simply reversing the order of the subject and the verb in the
subordinate clause and omitting if. This gives the conditional sentence a more formal tone
and as a result tends to be used more often in writing.

– Conditional using if: If I had won the lottery, I would have gone to Paris.
– Inverted conditional: Had I won the lottery, I would have gone to Paris.

Complete each sentence below by giving the correct form of the verb in parentheses.
1. Whenever my roommate _______________ (snore) loudly, I cannot sleep.

3. If we ____________ (not take) an exam on the conditional, we might not have learned it.

Tips and tricks for being more productive!

I fall asleep instantly right after coming home from school. I have really messed up my sleep schedule.

It's always like this. Everytime its around 4:00-5:00 PM I just wanna go to bed fast and because I sleep so early I always forget to do my homework because I will wake up the next day at like 2:30 in the morning.

I will always excuse myself that oh, there's homework I can always do that tomorrow. Sleep's much more important then I just crash and whenever I wake up I dread the feeling of doing the homework because I forgot what it's about. I can't really understand myself.

I don't want to wake up so early in the morning and do yesterday's work but really whenever it's around the afternoon I juuust really wanna shut my eyes and sleep. I want to know if anyone's just like me or they were before but they found a solution to the problem. Advice please!

Edit: Thanks. I appreciate everyone's advice. It was helpful.

“I Left My Homework at Home!”

Have you ever arrived at school and discovered that you left your homework at home …or your lunch money, gym shoes, library books, permission slip for next week’s field trip…?

If you think it is annoying forgetting these things, your parents and teachers find it even more frustrating! The good news is that it is fairly easy to become better prepared for school. You just need to develop a few simple routines.

Action Plan

Step 1: Put your homework away as soon as you finish each assignment. Do not wait until the next morning or even later in the evening. When you finish something, put it away –in the correct folder- immediately! This will prevent your papers from being lost in the wrong folder, falling off the table and sliding under the refrigerator, sticking to your younger brother’s book and going to school with him, or simply being forgotten.

Step 2: Get ready for school before you go to bed. Mornings are almost always rushed and hectic, so it becomes very likely that you will forget something important at home. Instead of waiting until morning, develop the habit of collecting everything you need the night before school. Gather all of your books, folders, and notebooks together and pack them into your book bag. You should also set out your clothes, shoes, jacket, and any other things you will need for school the next day.

Step 3: Do a “double-check” every morning. Create a list of everything you need for each day of the week and post it on your door. In addition to the standard things you need every day like your book bag, your list should also remind you about library books that are due on Tuesday, gym shoes that you need for Thursday, etc. You can access a free “Night Before School Tool” here . Ask an adult to help you download and customize the chart at this website. Then, post it on your door and check it every morning before you leave for school.

In Conclusion

It does not take much effort to become better prepared for school. When you are better prepared, your school days will go much more smoothly, your parents and teachers will be much happier, and your grades will likely improve as you turn more assignments in on time!
