The Graduate Hotels brand—now known as Graduate by Hilton —has, throughout the years, become synonymous with college town accommodation that doesn’t suck. Graduate’s latest property, Graduate Princeton , is further testament to Weprin’s vision. The 180-room property opened earlier this month in Princeton’s historic Nassau Street, directly opposite the university’s campus. It’s the first hotel to open in Princeton in nearly 90 years—and only the second hotel downtown, nearly doubling the number of available hotel rooms in town.

“When we started Graduate ten years ago, Princeton was at the top of our list,” Weprin said. “The history, the heritage, the backdrop, the charm, the sophistication—it’s just the idea of what somebody envisions college looks like in America.”

Weprin's firm, AJ Capital Partners, meticulously restored, modernized, and expanded the 1918-era, Colonial Revival-style former university dormitory in partnership with architecture firm Stonehill Taylor. The hotel’s design pays homage to Princeton’s local culture, lore, and traditions, including subtle (and not-so-subtle) references to the university and the town’s 275-year history. Think nods to influential alumni, local architecture, and storied traditions synonymous with the Princeton student experience.

Upon entering Graduate Princeton’s Gothic library-inspired lobby, guests are greeted by a hand-carved wooden reception desk flanked by four wooden statues of the school’s beloved mascot, the Tiger. Floor tiles rendered in Princeton’s signature orange and black anchor the lobby, which lined with thousands of books and a collection of colorfully embroidered vintage Reunions Jackets—a token received by alumni at their 25th reunion.

A 30-foot carved wooden study table, a staple in every Graduate, is reminiscent of the historic libraries on campus and serves as a place for visitors and students to study, gather, and connect. The names of Princeton’s storied eating clubs are painted in gold leaf on the library bookcases that frame the space. On the opposite end of the lobby is Ye Tavern, the hotel’s bar and restaurant, named after a storied 1930s-era bar that once occupied the site.

Ye Tavern takes design cues from its namesake. A carved wooden bar—recalling the lancet windows found throughout campus—is a focal point of the space. Leather-topped banquettes weave through the center of the space, punctuated by stone-top tables. Inside the guest rooms, references to Princeton’s color palette are carried throughout, with orange-and-white seersucker drapes matching an apricot-hued carpet. Bedside lamps inspired by the Revolutionary War-era cannon buried behind Nassau Hall sit beside custom bed frames featuring hand-drawn illustrations referencing the university’s annual Cane Spree—Princeton’s first organized intramural event dating back to the 1860s.

Each room also features framed artwork referencing some of the university’s most storied traditions. Guest bathrooms feature custom wallpaper inspired by the campus’ renowned arboretum, paired with a framed sketch by Albert Einstein, a reference to his time working for Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study.

To find out more about the recent launch, we spoke to some key members of the Graduate Princeton team below.

I'd love more details about how the team tackled the unique architectural challenge of renovating a former student dorm building from 1918. What elements of the building were preserved, and how challenging was that to do?

Michael Monarca, general manager, Graduate Princeton:

In order to preserve the building’s history and character, we meticulously restored the original façade, brick by brick. Additionally, we ensured that the materials we used in the new building echoed the design of the original 1918 structure, such as the pre-cast concrete coping.

While we weren't able to keep everything from the original structure, we preserved as much as we could. We were able to keep the original floors and key structural elements, but the glass windows were replaced to optimize energy efficiency.

The biggest challenge was creating a seamless transition between the 1918-era structure and the newly-built portion of the hotel. This was a significant undertaking as it involved re-working the structural design to connect both buildings. The end result is beautiful!

What design elements make this property uniquely Princeton? The school and town have a rich history—how is this history celebrated in the design details of the rooms and property, and, wider than that, in the guest experience?

At Graduate Princeton, we have two buildings merging together: one which is over 100 years old, and another which is brand new. In the same vein, Graduate Princeton is a new hotel that celebrates the history of the town and university.

During the process of researching the original building where Graduate Princeton resides, we learned about a restaurant that once existed in the basement. The local resident who told us this story knew of the restaurant because her great grandfather owned a barber shop right across from it called “Jack Honore’s Barber Shop,” which was a Princeton staple for many years. The resident often spent Friday evenings sharing Manhattans with her grandfather up until his passing. We went to the Princeton Historical Society to find out more, and found newspaper advertisements from 1927 confirming the existence of “Ye Tavern.”

In order to pay tribute to the building’s history, and to thank the resident for sharing this story, we not only named the restaurant “Ye Tavern” after the original establishment, but the Manhattan on our menu is now named “In Honore of Jack!”

There is a tradition at Princeton University known as the “Cane Spree,” which began in the 1860’s. In this time, when “gentlemen” would walk with a walking stick or cane, the University’s sophomores decided to create a rule that freshmen could no longer carry canes, and the sophomores would wrestle the canes away from the freshmen. This eventually turned into Princeton’s first organized intramural event, and has evolved today into a multi-sport class competition—almost like a field day. To honor this tradition, all of the headboards in our guest rooms are fashioned out of canes, which feature unique carvings that celebrate the rich history of both the university and the town of Princeton.

Finally, why is this such an exciting opening for the Graduate brand—and what makes the Princeton property stand out?

Villanova University Awards Mendel Medal to Eminent Vaccinologist and Pediatrician Peter Hotez, MD, PhD

VILLANOVA, Pa. (August 29, 2024) — Villanova University has named Professor Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and founding dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, as the 2024 recipient of the Mendel Medal . Dr. Hotez will present the Mendel Medal lecture, titled “Global Immunizations and the Antipoverty Vaccines: The Science vs the Anti-Science,” on Friday, November 8, 2024.

The Mendel Medal is named for 19th-century Augustinian friar and scientist Gregor Mendel, best known as “the father of modern genetics,” for his discovery of the celebrated laws of heredity that bear his name. Dr. Hotez is the 54th recipient of the award, which was first presented by Villanova in 1929 and is given to outstanding contemporary scientists in recognition of their accomplishments.

“Villanova University is proud to celebrate Dr. Peter Hotez’s valuable advancements to science and medicine by presenting him with the 2024 Mendel Medal,” said Fr. Kail Ellis, OSA, PhD, Special Assistant to the President and Dean Emeritus of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Villanova University. “His contributions have had a global impact, and in true Augustinian character are concentrated on helping communities devoid of certain medical necessities that are crucial to health. Additionally, his quest to educate the public on vaccine science are both an embodiment of this award, and Gregor Mendel himself.”

Dr. Hotez’s lifelong dedication to the development of novel vaccines has impacted millions of people throughout the world. In 2022, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize after co-leading the development of a low-cost and patent-free Covid vaccine technology, leading to the delivery of 100 million vaccine doses to India and Indonesia. His coronavirus research includes ongoing work to develop a pan-coronavirus vaccine to target multiple variants at once. Active in the fight against neglected diseases of poverty, specifically, Dr. Hotez has worked diligently to develop vaccines for human hookworm anemia infection—which affects roughly 400 million individuals worldwide—and schistosomiasis, both of which are currently in clinical trials. He has also devised novel vaccines for Chagas disease and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), among others, and is an author of more than 700 scientific publications.

In addition to his contributions to vaccine technology and the prevention of neglected diseases of poverty, Dr. Hotez is active in combating vaccine misinformation, particularly through his five authored books. He has been recognized by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) with their Scientific Freedom and Responsibility Award, and by the American Medical Association (AMA) with their Scientific Achievement Award, among numerous other accolades from various esteemed entities. Prof. Hotez is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds several honorary doctoral degrees.

It is especially exciting to view the list of international scientists who have also received the Mendel Medal, and I’m humbled to join this extraordinary group”

School psychology students and faculty present at 2024 nasp convention .

Six graduate students, along with two faculty members from the Utah State University (USU) psychology department’s school psychology program attended and presented at the 2024 National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) annual convention held in New Orleans, Louisianna this month.

NASP represents and supports the profession of school psychology by advancing practices to improve students learning, behavior, and mental health. This year the NASP annual convention was held in New Orleans and allows professionals and students to connect with over 5,000 peers in the field to expand their professional networks. This year there were over 1,200 development sessions to target the unique interests of each person attending. Students from our school psychology program had the opportunity to present on their research interests ss part of these development sessions.

All six students who attended had the opportunity to present during the convention. Three students in the progam: Mary Phan, Ashely Herd, and Katie Reiter-Lavery, presented on the topic of Mindfulness-Based Intervention with teachers in the classroom. This presentation was based on research that was conducted as part of Phan’s thesis. “This was a sentimental presentation for me,” shares Herd, “when I was an undergraduate research assistant, I got my foot in the door of the School Mental Health lab by helping Mary out with this very project. It was really meaningful to have everything come full circle and get to help present her research, this time as a graduate student in the School Mental Health lab.”

These types of conventions provide an incredible opportunity for students to learn and further develop their understanding of their field from people from many different backgrounds. “These conferences are really helpful when it comes to learning about current research and how it affects what we do in the field,” explains Herd. “The mini-skills presentations can also be fun because I usually walk away with some good ideas regarding how I can apply those skills back home. Conferences serve as a valuable opportunity for networking and for getting in touch with other professionals who are interested in the same things as you.”

The experience of attending NASP’s annual convention is valuable for graduate students and faculty members alike as it provides the space to present research, fosters growth and camaraderie, and overall helps advance the field of school psychology

Award description:

Effective May 1, 2019 (spring 2019 admissions cycle), the International Master’s Award of Excellence, valued at $2,500 per term for a maximum of five full-time terms within the allowable program time limits (6 terms), will be awarded to eligible international master’s students normally entering a research-based graduate program at the University of Waterloo. Faculties will nominate eligible students based on the Faculty’s award allocation. Students will be selected based on academic excellence as demonstrated through their application for admission to the graduate program.

Value description:

Award valued at $2,500 per term for a maximum of five terms.

• International students who are registered full time and assessed international tuition fees. 
• Normally given to students in research-based programs (thesis or major research paper). 
• Will normally only be given to students entering the first term of their program (term 1.0).
• Students must demonstrate academic excellence through criteria established by the Faculty.
• Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program and not have outstanding probationary admission requirements. 
• This award could be in addition to other internal or external scholarships (e.g., UW Graduate Scholarship, OGS,  etc).   Note: scholarships are different than sponsorships – see next bullet.
• Normally, students should not be concurrently receiving foreign government or agency sponsorship (e.g., China Scholarship Council, Libyan sponsorship, etc) or be fully or partially self-funded in excess of the Faculty minimum levels of support.

Leading Computational Scientist and Oncology Researcher Elana Fertig, PhD, Appointed as New Director of the Institute for Genome Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine

Internationally-recognized for her work in developing predictive models for drug resistance in cancer treatment

Dr. Fertig is currently a Professor of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University with dual appointments in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. She also serves as the Co-Director of the Single Cell Consortium at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as well as the Co-Director of the Convergence Institute and the Associate Director of Quantitative Sciences at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. Her landmark research involves using computational methods to identify biomarkers and molecular mechanisms of therapeutic resistance from a vast trove of multi-platform genomics data.

Dr. Fraser served on the search committee for the new IGS director: “With her leadership experience building a quantitative and technological oncology program at Hopkins," Dr. Fraser said. "I have no doubt that Dr. Fertig is perfectly positioned to lead IGS into the future and to new heights.”

Added Dean Gladwin: “Building on the legacy of founder Claire Fraser, PhD, the IGS is poised for even greater success by using genomic research mathematical models to enable researchers to understand the intricate interaction between genes, proteins, and environmental factors.” He is also the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and Dean, UMSOM, and Vice President for Medical Affairs, University of Maryland, Baltimore. “Dr. Fertig’s expertise, in using computational methods to blend mathematical modeling and artificial intelligence, will be an invaluable asset to IGS as faculty continue to revolutionize genomic science and apply technologies to basic science and clinical research.”

During her 16 years at Hopkins, Dr. Fertig has built a transdisciplinary lab, with researchers spanning diverse scientific backgrounds to bridge the fields of mathematical theory, software development, cancer biology, and clinical oncology, all vital to help achieve her mission: to account for the complex evolutionary processes in cancer for therapeutic selection. With over 130 research publications, she is currently principal investigator or core lead on several National Cancer Institute Consortia grants, including the Cancer Systems Biology, Informatics Technologies for Cancer Research, and Translational and Basic Science in Early Lesions Consortia, and the National Institute of Aging Mouse SenNet Consortium. She is a co-investigator on several other major grants totaling more than $30 million.

The search committee was headed by Taofeek Owonikoko, MD, PhD,   the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Professor of Oncology at UMSOM and Executive Director of the  University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC) .

“In Dr. Fertig, we found the ideal visionary who will work to align IGS with the clinical and research missions of the Greenebaum Cancer Center as well with other UMSOM clinical departments to deliver cutting-edge advances in genome research and clinical genomic testing,” said Dr. Owonikoko. “Her experience in developing novel computational methods to analyze multidimensional data from advanced sequencing technology platforms will help advance our precision medicine mission that will ultimately improve treatments and outcomes for patients.”

Dr. Fertig earned a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics at Brandeis University and received her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). Her unique blend interpreting biological systems by integrating these high-throughput data with artificial intelligence and mathematical modeling techniques is informed by her background in applied mathematics and numerical weather prediction from her graduate training at UMCP. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Oncology at Johns Hopkins University before accepting a faculty position at the university.

“I want to thank our entire search committee, led by Dr. Taofeek Owonikoko who made this recruitment come to fruition,” said Dean Gladwin. “I also want to extend my deep appreciation to Dr. Jacques Ravel for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to IGS in serving as Acting Director for more than two years.”

Researchers Discover One of the Largest Known Bacteria-to-Animal Gene Transfer Inside a Fruit Fly

A fruit fly genome is not a just made up of fruit fly DNA – at least for one fruit fly species. New research from the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) shows that one fruit fly species contains whole genomes of a kind of bacteria, making this finding the largest bacteria-to-animal transfer of genetic material ever discovered. The new research also sheds light on how this happens.

New Genomic Research Shows Why Testing Malaria Vaccines in the Clinic is as Rigorous as Natural Exposure in the Field

Malaria is the deadliest mosquito-borne parasitic infection of humans. In 2021, after a century of research, the World Health Organization (WHO) approved the world’s first malaria vaccine. UM School of Medicine Helps Maryland Conduct State-Wide Sequencing of Variants in Positive COVID-19 Test Specimens

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) co-authored a study, published today in the journal Science, that details the sequencing of 64 full human genomes. This reference data includes individuals from around the world and better captures the genetic diversity of the human species. University of Maryland School of Medicine’s (UMSOM) Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS) researchers have created the first catalogue of genes that comprise the community of microbes, which inhabit the human vagina. The catalogue, called human vaginal non-redundant gene catalog (VIRGO), was recently released as a public resource that can be used by researchers to facilitate a more in-depth understanding of the role of vaginal microorganisms in women’s health and to potentially develop future treatments for certain gynecologic conditions.

UM School of Medicine Researchers Institute for Genome Sciences' Researchers Discover Potential New Treatment for Tropical Parasitic Disease Using Genomics

Using innovative RNA sequencing techniques, researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Institute for Genome Sciences identified a promising novel treatment for lymphatic filariasis, a disabling parasitic disease that is difficult to treat. The potential new therapy is an experimental cancer drug called JQ1 and targets proteins found prominently in the worm’s genome; it appears to effectively kill the adult worms in a laboratory setting, according to the study which was published today in the journal mSystems.

Purdue scores top 10 among U.S. public universities in QS world rankings

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —

The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University rankings, released Tuesday (June 27), lists Purdue as the No. 27-ranked university in the U.S., No. 10 among U.S. publics. The public institution ranking is up three spots from last year. Purdue is also back in the global top-100 list among 1,500 universities around the world, jumping 30 spots from last year.

Now in its 20th year, the  QS World University rankings  introduced three new metrics to determine its list: sustainability, employment outcomes and international research network. The methodology also includes academic reputation; employer reputation; faculty/student ratio; and other measures of undergraduate, graduate and research excellence.

“Excellence at Scale is Purdue’s signature, and the latest worldwide ranking is another reflection of the combined reputation and metrics that put Purdue in the top 10 among U.S. public universities,” said Purdue president Mung Chiang. “While all rankings are partial and noisy, we appreciate the relentless pursuit of academic excellence by our colleagues and students that distinguishes Purdue in the world.”

The University offers full time and part time PhD programs in engineering, computer applications, management, commerce, pharmacy, education etc. Candidates must have passed their post graduation with minimum 55% marks or its equivalent CGPA. They are required to fill an application form accompanied by a research proposal which will be considered by the university research committee. The applicants who are selected are required to write an entrance examination set by the university and this examination involves objective questions that aims to test the research ability, logic and subject knowledge.  

The candidates who have cleared the written test would be required to face the expert panel’s interview where they will be tested on their specialized field knowledge, research capabilities and areas of interest. The admission of candidates for the PhD program is done by considering their general performance, research proposal and scores in the test conducted by the university as well as interview that is conducted. This means that selected scholars must cover pre-PhD courses, produce a research proposal that must be endorsed by the Research Advisory Committee, and finish their thesis within the maximum time of six years for full-time and eight years for the part-time candidates. Admission Procedure:

Candidates will be selected on the basis of their performance in KUEST conducted by the University (70% weightage) followed by personnel interview (30% weightage). Those who have qualified and possess a valid scorecard in CSIR-UGC NET (Category -1, 2 & 3)/DBT-JRF/ICMR-JRF/DST-INSPIRE or equivalent national level examination/ fellowship/ GATE/ GPAT and M.Phil degree holders in the last two years shall be exempted from KUEST. However, they should appear for the personnel interview as per the scheduled date.

Special Note:

• The marks obtained in the CSIR-UGC NET (Category -2 & 3) will be valid for a period of one year and 70% weightage will be given for test scores and 30% weightage for the interview.
• Full-time scholars with 65% marks or an equivalent CGPA in their postgraduate degree will receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 20,000 until the submission of their thesis. However, possession of 65% marks or an equivalent CGPA alone does not qualify one for the scholarship.

The guidelines for admissions for Ph.D. programme-2024 are as follows.

KUEST-2024 Exam Pattern

• Candidates shall be admitted in the Ph.D. programme based on merit in written test (KUEST-2024) and personal interview.
• Qualifying candidates will be required to take an Entrance Test, Kaziranga University Eligibility and Scholastic Test (KUEST-2024) for Research, followed by the Personal Interview on the date.
• Candidates who have cleared UGC-NET-JRF/LS of CSIR-UGC NET/GATE/GPAT cleared in last 2 years or valid score card in the relevant subjects will get preference and shall be exempted from KUEST-2024. They will however require to appear for the Personal Interview. The KUEST-2024 will be given   two hours exam   duration   to answer.
• Section-1: Common Paper Exam: Research Methodology (Total 50 Marks; MCQ Type of Questions; One Mark Each Question).
• Section-2: Subject Specific Paper Exam: Computer Science and Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Civil Engineering/ Electrical Engineering/Electronics and Communication Engineering/IT/Pharmacy/Microbiology/Biotechnology/Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics/Social Sciences/Social Work/Sociology/Management (Total 50 Marks; MCQ Type of Questions; One Mark Each Question).

Personal Interview

• Candidates have to give a presentation on the proposed research topic. Presentation duration is 10 minutes followed by 5 minutes’ discussion. Candidate must prepare a synopsis (Hard copy) of the proposed research topic.
• 50% weightage will be given on the presentation on the proposed research topic and 50% weightage will be given on Post Graduate Dissertation/Research Work.

The overall merit will be calculated out of 200 marks.

At the time of the interview:  candidates are required to bring a research proposal, not exceeding 300 words, which will describe.

Course credit requirement, course work, course registration

• After having been admitted as a doctoral student, each Ph.D. student shall be required to undertake course work as per the recommendation of the UGC for a minimum period of one semester and  maximum of two semesters . The course work shall be treated as pre-Ph.D preparation and must include a course on Research Methodology which may include quantitative methods, computer applications, research and publication ethics and review of published research in the relevant field etc. as recommended by University Grants Commission (UGC). Other courses shall be advanced level courses preparing the students for M.Phil/Ph.D. degree.

• Ph.D. students shall have to take courses offered by the concerned Department/School for the Ph.D programme.
• The UDRC shall suggest course work depending on the specific requirements of the area of research and the previous knowledge, expertise and experience of the candidate.
• The Board of Studies of the Department/School where the scholar pursues his/her research shall design the courses except Research Methodology and get them approved in the Academic Council (AC).
• A Research Scholar shall appear before the SDPC once in six months to make a presentation of the progress of his/her work for evaluation and further guidance. The six monthly progress reports shall be submitted by the approved SDPC members to Dean Research’s office with a copy to the Research Scholar.
• A student must secure a CGPA of 6 (six) in course work in order to continue and submit his/her Ph.D. thesis. The evaluation procedures and the computation of SGPA/CGPA shall be done according to the procedures adopted for the master’s programme of The Assam Kaziranga University.
• A Ph.D. scholar is expected to successfully complete the course work in one semester, after which she/he becomes eligible to present the synopsis of research work. In case a scholar fails to appear or secure less than 6 CGPA, he/she can appear the examination for improvement at the end of second semester. If he/she fails to clear the course work by the end of second semester, he/she shall be removed from the rolls. There will be no re-admission in case of PhD programs.
• Candidates already holding M.Phil. Degree and admitted to the Ph.D. programs may be exempted by the Department from the Ph.D. course work only as per the Regulation of UGC guidelines. All other candidates admitted to the Ph.D program shall be required to complete the Ph.D. course work prescribed by the Department/School.

Attendance during Course Work:

• The minimum requirement of attendance for completing the coursework shall be 75%. The doctoral student should register for every semester as per the KU Doctoral programme guidelines.
• For special cases, condoning in shortfall of the attendance below required attendance will be at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor of The Assam Kaziranga University.

• The campus is quite peaceful, it escapes the city noise and provides a calm and cool environment.
• Most of the facilities are well qualified and are quite capable.
• Even though the campus environment is good it still lacks in most infrastructures there is a lack of shops for commercial amenities for hostellers.

ADMISSION PROCESS:

The guidelines for admissions for Ph.Dprogramme are as follows.

Candidates shall be admitted in the Ph.Dprogramme based on merit in written test and interview Qualifying candidates will be required to take an Entrance Test, Kaziranga University Eligibility and Scholastic Test for Research, KUEST (R) followed by the Interview on the date.

Candidates who have cleared NET-JRF/LS of CSIR-UGC/GATE cleared in last 2 years in the relevant subject will get preference and shall be exempted from KURAT. They will however require to appear for the Personal Interview. The KUEST(R) will comprise of two sections for which the candidate will be given three hours to answer.

Section 1 = shall be common to all the Applicants for testing the General Knowledge & Research Aptitude, covering questions from following areas and will carry 100 marks (in four sub sections of 25 marks each):

General Awareness English Language Logical Reasoning Quantitative Data Analysis and Interpretation

Section 2 = shall be Program / Subject Specific i.e. as per proposed area of Research / Knowledge area of the applicant (viz Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology, Chemistry, Physics). This section will carry 100 marks and will comprise of following sub sections of 50 marks each:

PhD Programme (research interest area) Knowledge / subject.

Presonal Interview :

will carry 100 marks. The overall merit will be calculated out of 300 marks (Section 1, Section 2 & PI)

At the time of the interview:

candidates are required to bring a research proposal, not exceeding 300 words, which will describe.
