Almost every week there’s a new corporate crisis dominating my newsfeed. Yet less than half of U.S. companies surveyed have a crisis plan in place. My assumption: Most leaders think it’ll never happen to them. But in the era of social media and viral scandals, the odds are not in their favor.

While most companies that do plan for a crisis focus on the big risks—product recalls, cybersecurity breaches or natural disasters—these days, even a small, obscure event can turn into a high-profile catastrophe.

In fact, it’s the crises you least expect that can blow up quickly without a solid plan and proactive approach. Here are five situations that can turn bad fast, plus tips to manage them effectively before they get out of control.

Layoffs Gone Wrong

We’ve seen a spate of layoff crises over the last several months, ranging from insensitive delivery to dropping hints that send teams into a tailspin.

To help avoid potential disaster, first and foremost, put yourself in your team’s shoes. How would you want to hear the news? These should be one-on-one conversations, not mass Zoom calls. First, assemble a diverse creative and review team. You’ll want to get as many viewpoints as possible to ensure your ad campaign is inclusive from every angle.

If a launch goes poorly, how you handle the response may matter more than the initial offense. If you double down, get defensive or issue an insincere apology, you’ll worsen the problem. Instead, be genuinely curious and empathetic about what went wrong and how you can correct it. Audiences will be much more forgiving if your response is authentic.

A CEO who’s a little too post happy can impact your business for the worse, from customer reaction to stock performance.

An executive social media strategy mitigates this stress by having your internal team or agency partner run your executive’s profile for them. That includes developing a content strategy and crafting posts that align with business objectives and company values.

While some execs may shy away from someone else running their social media, it doesn’t mean they’d be excluded from the process. It’s a collaboration. They still have access to post and engage with commenters because they know those relationships best. If your CEO is hesitant, remind them they get to approve everything. It takes some of the workload off their plate while also keeping the cadence of regular posting so your content (and your brand) stays in your target audiences’ feeds.
