Personal Safety as A Community Health Nurse Victoria Dennis Arizona College of Nursing NUR 426L: Community Health Nursing Practicum Professor Shatonya Davis January 21, 2024

Personal Safety as A Community Health Nurse Part 1: Risk Assessment Potential Risks There are unique challenges in community health nursing that need thorough risk assessment. Risks that nurses could face include exposure to infectious diseases, injuries from violent crimes, and emotional stress (Savage, 2023). Additional transportation risks exist when providing in-home care while traveling, particularly in places with a high rate of crime or poor infrastructure. Vulnerable Populations Additional safety risks are posed by vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, individuals with problems with substance abuse, and the homeless. These people tend to be more vulnerable to disease and injury, this can be made worse by their limited access to medical treatment (Savage, 2023). Environmental Factors The availability of resources and neighborhood safety are two environmental factors that contribute to safety risk. Community health nurses are more vulnerable in unsafe neighborhoods and in situations without emergency help or necessary safety equipment (OSHA, 2016). Part 2: Safety Plan Personal Safety Measures Implementing personal safety measures is essential to reducing these risks. Per OSHA guidelines, nurses should wear personal safety equipment and maintain a high level of situational awareness (OSHA, 2016). Creating credible channels of communication is also essential to ensuring safety under unpredictable situations. Communication and Collaboration For nurses working in the community, cooperation with local law enforcement, leaders in the community, and health organizations improves safety and support. According to Savage (2023), this network plays an important role in offering assistance and promoting a safer workplace. Emergency Response Plan
