On 2nd October, Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year. On this day, one of the great leaders who helped India to get independent was born. His name is Mahatma Gandhi. On 2nd October every year, India celebrates a national holiday in remembrance and honour of the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as Gandhi Jayanti. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also famously referred to as Mahatma Gandhi, was given the title of “Father of The Nation'' by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for his relentless struggles for our independence. The Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore gave him the title of ‘Mahatma’, which means ‘the one with the greatest soul’.

This year is his 155th birth anniversary, and we are here to revisit the principles with which he led his life and fought for independence.

Gandhiji’s two main principles were peace and non-violence (Ahimsa). He had always been a follower of truth, honesty, and non-violence. As he gave the world a strong weapon of ‘non-violence’ for fighting, the UN General Assembly declared this day as the ‘International Day of Non-Violence’ to honour his principles.

If we look into the biography of Mahatma Gandhi, he was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, on October 2, 1869, in British India to a merchant-class family. He completed his initial studies in British-ruled India and later went to England to pursue law. After completing his education, he tried to practise law in India. At 24 he left India with his wife Kasturba Gandhi to practice law in South Africa.

In South Africa, he encountered inequality for the first time due to his race and colour. He was thrown out of the train because he didn’t resemble his white co-passengers. He worked in South Africa to improve the lives of Indians for a few years.

When he returned to India to practice law, he was appalled to see the injustices around him, which triggered a deep sense of doing justice in him. Soon he joined the Indian National Congress and started working for India’s independence with Champaran Satyagraha in 1917.

With his weapon of non-violence, he showed the world a new light toward change. He always fought for what was right participated in many non-violent civil rights movements, and led many campaigns like Dandi March to protest against British rule.

In 1930, he led the Dandi March, also called Salt March, to protest against the illegally imposed salt tax as this basic amenity was already freely available to the Indians due to our coastal location. Thousands of people followed Gandhi. He also led the famous Quit India Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, and Non-co-operation Movement to attain India’s independence from the ruling Britishers. Due to these protests, Mahatma Gandhi, along with his followers and many other freedom fighters, served their time in prison.

He invented a new way to protest referred to as peaceful Civil Disobedience (Satyagraha). His non-violent protests impacted the people of the world in many ways. He struggled for India’s freedom and helped us gain freedom from the British subjugation that lasted over 200 years. Gandhi ji also toiled to remove social evils that were rampant in the then-Indian society. This included evils like sati, child marriage, untouchability, and casteism.

Gandhiji led a life of simplicity. He wanted to preach to his followers to keep things simple and not be attached to worldly pleasures. Despite being a world-renowned leader, he wore plain Khadi clothes that he spun at home on his charkha. He was inspired by the great ascetics and gurus of India who achieved great feats through simple living. Gandhiji was devoutly religious and respectful towards all Indian religions. He believed in the equality of all and that everybody had a right to worship their own gods.

He devoted his life relentlessly to spreading awareness about the importance of equality, peace, harmony and brotherhood. He always opposed untouchability and worked for Hindu-Muslim unity. He believed in eradicating all social evils, worked with his wife, Kasturba, to empower women, and fought for women’s rights. He was also concerned about farmers, so he tried to improve their economic condition throughout his life. His principles and values still hold great value, and people consider it the right path to follow. His ideas were spread by many of his disciples, literature writers, and artists.

On 30 January 1948, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse at the age of 78. His samadhi, named Raj Ghat, is situated in Delhi. He is no more with us, but his light and guidance are immortal. ‘Hey Ram’ were his last words , and ‘My life is my message’ was his motto.

Our honourable Prime Minister, President, and other people go to Raj Ghat to pay respect to his Samadhi on Gandhi Jayanti with flowers. His favourite song, ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram,’ is also sung worldwide on the occasion. All academic institutions, government offices, and other organisations stay closed on this day. Good morning all! My name is (your name), and we have gathered to celebrate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.

On 2nd October every year, India observes a national holiday Gandhi Jayanti to celebrate independence and honour the principles through which our freedom fighter and leader, Mahatma Gandhi, led us to this day. This year, we are celebrating the 155th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Father of our Nation, who is also called Bapu, especially by children.

He worked in South Africa against racial injustice. He fought for our independence by following the principles of peace and non-violence. He led many successful campaigns, like removing the tax imposed on salt and also calling out the British to Quit India - all through non-violence.

He was the cheerleader for reforming rights and questioning norms, especially for the underprivileged and for a section of society that was paid the least attention to. He worked to attain India’s freedom and freed us from British governance after 200 years. He also strived to abolish untouchability in Indian society.

Gandhi Ji preferred a simple life with minimal things and was a keen observer of cleanliness. Our government runs ‘Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan’ in his name to encourage people to keep their surroundings clean. Despite being a known leader, he always wore plain Khadi clothes. This symbolises his simplistic way of living, which was one of his ideas of living. In his spare time, he spun Khadi on a charkha.

He lived like an ascetic and used minimal things in his day-to-day routine. Gandhi Ji deeply respected and took pride in the Indian traditional culture. He was a pious man who believed in God and encouraged people to follow their gods without any discrimination.

Gandhiji breathed his last on 30th January 1948 and uttered “Hey Ram” as his last words. He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. He rests today at Raj Ghat in New Delhi, and thousands of people pay respect in the form of garlands and by singing his favourite song, ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’.

India’s Prime Minister, President, and other notable leaders go to Raj Ghat (his Samadhi) on Gandhi Jayanti to pay tribute to him.

• Now write at least 4 to 5 sentences giving more details about the topic. You can explain why you like it or why it’s important.

• End your essay with 2-3 sentences summing up all your thoughts regarding the topic.

5. Video Supplements

• Purpose : Video essays or supplements are a newer trend where students are asked to answer a prompt via a short, recorded video. These formats offer admissions committees a chance to observe a student’s personality, passion, and communication skills directly. Brown University has become particularly known for its requirement of a video supplement.

Do colleges really look at supplemental essays?

Colleges definitely look at supplemental essays. Since the personal essay is a multipurpose essay often used for all or most of the schools to which a student is applying, the supplemental essay(s) gives admissions officers the chance to really understand why a student is interested in a specific program or school. They are particularly important as a differentiator for highly selective schools and programs, since many applicants will have strong grades and test scores. The supplemental essay is where you can emphasize unique experiences, perspectives, and academic interests that align with the college’s programs​.

Supplemental Essays in 2024

When will the supplemental essay prompts for 2024-2025 be released.

The 2024-2025 supplemental essay prompts were released over the summer of 2024 and can be found in the Common Application portal under the “Writing Supplement” Section (sometimes called “Other” or “Additional Essay”) for each school to which you are applying.

When Do Schools Release Supplemental Essays?

Supplemental Essay prompts are officially released on Aug 1 each year for the Common Application. Individual schools may choose to release their supplemental essays slightly earlier in July or later in August. Schools change their supplemental essays frequently so make sure you are using the correct prompts for your admissions cycle before beginning.

Colleges Without Supplemental Essays

Not all colleges choose to use supplemental essays ( here’s a nice list) . In some cases the supplemental essays are optional. If your school does not require supplemental essays but offers them, it is definitely advantageous to complete them.

• Understand the Ethos of the Essay. The ethos is the core message or character of your essay. It should align with the prompt and strategically reflect your application narrative​​. Before writing, ask yourself: What message am I trying to convey through this essay? Your ethos should make clear your values, interests, and the role you would play at the university. Each supplemental essay should contribute to your overall narrative, complementing other parts of your application.
• Tailor Your Response to Each School. Each college has its own unique culture and expectations, so it’s crucial to tailor your responses accordingly​​. Schools often ask for essays about why you want to attend or how you would contribute to their community. Research the specific programs, faculty, and opportunities that align with your goals, and reflect those details in your essay. Show that you’ve done your homework and understand how you fit into the school’s environment.
• Be Specific and Personal. Avoid vague or overly general answers. Use concrete examples from your experiences to illustrate your points​. If you’re discussing a future academic interest, describe specific engagements or research projects you've been involved with that align with the program you’re applying to​. Personalizing your response by connecting it to your own narrative makes your essay more authentic and engaging​.

When choosing prompts or topics, consider those that allow you to showcase your unique perspective. Approach the essay in an unexpected way—avoid clichés and predictable answers. Think of creative ways to address the prompt, like challenging an assumption or posing an intriguing question​.
• Use an Intellectual and Strategic Tone. Admissions committees are looking for critical thinkers. Even in personal essays, demonstrate depth of thought by explaining why your experiences or interests matter in the broader context of your future goals​​. Don’t just state facts—reflect on them and discuss how they have shaped your intellectual journey and potential contributions to the college.
• Create a Coherent Narrative Across Essays. Each supplemental essay should serve a purpose within your overall application, contributing to a cohesive narrative​. If one essay focuses on your academic interests, another might highlight your leadership or community involvement. Together, they should paint a full picture of who you are and what you will bring to the school.
• Be Honest, but Strategic. While authenticity is important, your essays should also be strategic​. Focus on the aspects of your personality and experience that best align with the program and the ethos of the school. If you’re not sure which qualities to highlight, consider what the school values most (e.g., intellectual curiosity, leadership, collaboration) and emphasize those traits in your essays.

Writing dates can seem straightforward at times and confounding at others. This complexity in writing dates arises due to the different formats used worldwide. Many authors also get confused about how to write them using commas. Different methods for writing dates

There are several methods for writing dates that are accepted internationally.

Follow dialectical standards

• When using American English, the month should precede the day. First, write the month, then the day, and then the year. Examples are:
• September 10
• When using American English, separate the day and the year using a comma . If you are including the weekday, place a comma after it as well. A comma is not required if you are using British English. Examples are:
• September 10, 2022
• September tenth, 2022
• Saturday , September 10, 2022
• When using British English, the day should precede the month. This system is followed in many nations, including the UK and Australia. First, write the day, then the month, and then the year. Examples are:
• 10th September
• 10 September 2022
• Saturday the 10th of September 2022.
• When using British English, use “of” and “the.” The “of” and “the” should precede the month and day, respectively. It is also crucial to use them both together. Examples are:
• The 10th of September
• Saturday the tenth of September
• When using British English, the day should be followed by ordinal indicators. Use one ordinal indicator like -st, -th, -nd, or -rd that matches the suffix . Though not commonly followed, this format is still accepted in American English. Examples are:
• The 21st of September
• The 14th of September
• The 2nd of September
• The 3rd of September
• When writing for an international audience, use the International Standard to prevent confusion. In this format, first write the year, then the month, and then the day. Commas are not used and all four digits of the year are written. Examples are:
• 2022 September 10

Use different degrees of scope and formality

• When writing extremely formal invitations, be sure to spell the year, month, and day. The day should be written first even when you are using American English. This format is used for official certificates like diplomas and documents with the highest formalities, including wedding invitations. It is used to show deference and courtesy to the occasion and the reader.
• We request the presence of you and your family on the tenth of September in the year three thousand and thirty.
• When communicating in a semi-formal or slightly formal setting, spell only the month out. It is appropriate to use digits for the year and the day. This format is prevalent in academic writing. There is also a slight variation in the writing style depending on whether you use American or British English.
• For American English: “Queen Elizabeth II ascended the English throne on June 2, 1953.” or “Queen Elizabeth II ascended the English throne in June 1953.”
• For British English: “Queen Elizabeth II ascended the English throne on 2 June 1953.” or “Queen Elizabeth II ascended the English throne on 2nd of June 1953.”
• Use numerals when writing dates on records and documents. This format is usually followed for memos, impersonal business records like invoices or a piece of communication, or even on lecture notes. This is done to show when the document was made or when it is due. Use all numerals when filling out forms and keeping records. Points to note in this format:
• When writing greeting cards, use the MM/DD/YY format and write the date at the top. This will help the receiver know when the card was written. Example: 09/10/22.
• The YYYY-MM-DD pattern is usually used in museum databases to indicate the date an artifact was obtained. Example: 2022-09-10.
• When filling out government forms, use the MM-DD-YYYY format. Example: 09-10-2022.

Format for numerical dates

• Separate the numerals indicating the day, month, and year using hyphens or slashes. For a more elegant look, bullets or periods can also be used. Underscores are also used in some cases. Always use hyphens when writing in an international format. When using American English, the date September 10, 1992, can be written as:
• In international standards, it is written as 1992-10-09
• A writer can optionally add “0” when the day or month is a single-digit number. Although it is frequently necessary on forms, many forgo it in daily informal settings. Using this format will ensure that the numerical dates all have equal lengths and can be accurately sorted. Example:
• June fourth, 2018 can be written as 06/04/18 or 6/4/18. This makes its length similar to that of 12/12/18.
• When a form shows “MM-DD-YYYY” or “MM-DD-YY” format, always use numerals. This will also show the order in which to write the date. The number of “M”, “D”, and “Y” indicates the number of digits to be filled in. Example:
• “MM-DD-YYYY” can be filled in as 09-10-1992 and “MM-DD-YY” as 09-10-92.

Writing centuries

Centuries are written as plurals and when written in words they are written with all lowercase letters. Do not use apostrophes when writing centuries. Examples are:

• Women wore tailored suit dresses in the early 1900s.
• Women wore tailored suit dresses in the nineteen hundreds.
• Women wore tailored suit dresses in the twentieth century.

Writing decades

Apostrophes should be used before and after two-digit numbers used to represent decades, such as the ’90s. You can either write it as the 1990s or simply the nineties. Examples are:

• In the 90s, rock music was very popular.
• In the nineties, rock music was very popular.

Should “in” or “on” be used when writing dates ?

When referring to an exact day, write the date using “on.” When referring to the year or the month, use “in.”

I am flying to New York on September 10, 2022.

The cafe will cease operations in September 2022.

How are dates written in technical or official documents?

When writing technical or official documents, always follow international standards rather than American or British English. This will make the document understandable to people belonging to different countries.
