PhD in Medical Biophysics - Medical Physics Specialization

In addition to our  graduate programs , the Department of Medical Biophysics offers a CAMPEP  -accredited specialization for PhD students interested in a Medical Physics career. Medical Physics spans research, development, and clinical trials involving medical imaging and radiotherapy technologies.

In this specialization within our PhD program, students complete a thesis-based PhD, while completing a structured medical physics course curriculum. The specialized program provides a research-intensive environment that immerses students in clinical technologies pertinent to medical imaging, such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy. Cutting edge research involving machine learning, theranostics, and heavy particle therapy are ongoing. Students gain skills to pursue the production of high quality research and develop leadership skills.

Upon completion of their PhD, the official university transcript will declare “CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Specialization".

Admission Requirements - Medical Physics Specialization within the Medical Biophysics PhD program

Students wanting to enroll in the Medical Physics PhD Specialization must first apply to and be accepted into the Medical Biophysics PhD program . Admission consideration to the Medical Biophysics PhD requires:

completion of an appropriate master's degree from a recognized university 

a minimum A- average in the final two years of study. This is flexible for those demonstrating exceptional aptitude for research.

an admissions interview for all candidates who are a potential fit for the program.

To be eligible for admission to the Medical Physics PhD specialization, MBP PhD students must also have:

completed an undergraduate degree in physics or an equivalent, relevant quantitative physical or engineering science, or have least three upper level (3rd or 4th year) half-courses in traditional physics such as classical mechanics/dynamics, quantum mechanics, electromagnetic theory thermal physics, atomic/nuclear physics, optical physics, or laboratory physics. Applicants with a non-physics majors must have coursework that is equivalent to a minor in physics, as defined by the University of Toronto, involving upper-level physics (e.g., PHY356H1, PHY357H1) and calculus courses.

How to Apply to the MBP Medical Physics Specialization

Please note that in order to apply for the MBP Medical Physics Specialization, you must be enrolled in the MBP PhD program.

MBP PhD students must apply to the Medical Physics Specialization within 1 year of beginning their PhD program, ideally within the first six months. An official application to the MBP Medical Physics Specialization includes two main components:

A completed MBP Medical Physics Specialization Application Form .

Submission of post-secondary transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate programs taken, including your most up-to-date MBP transcript. Please note, any transcripts written in a language other than English must include an English translation.

Once completed, the application form and transcripts are to be emailed to [email protected] .

Medical Physics Student Organization

The Medical Physics Student Organization (MPSO) is a graduate student-led group that strives to provide professional development and mentorship opportunities for graduate students interested in pursuing a career as an accredited Medical Physicist. The group was created with the simultaneous launch of the Medical Physics CAMPEP PhD Specialization within the Department of Medical Biophysics in September 2023.

  • Brachytherapy radioisotopes, interface dosimetry, imaging dose distributions, neutron micro-dosimetry;
  • Nuclear and atomic techniques used for analysis of both trace toxic elements and major components of human body composition;
  • Development of novel radiopharmaceuticals and medical use of radioisotopes in diagnosis and therapy;
  • Novel methods of imaging bone architecture and joint structure non-invasively;

CSA Group Graduate Scholarship $$

The purpose of the CSA Group Graduate Scholarship is to support graduate students in the pursuit of knowledge generation related to standards. Full-time graduate students at the Masters level studying at a publicly funded, accredited Canadian university are eligible to apply.

The research can be conducted in any field (e.g. engineering, social sciences, health sciences) and must include standards as a component of the research. The topic does not need to be related to an area in which CSA Group already has standards. The research may investigate aspects of an existing standard or may explore an area for future standards development.

E.B. Eastburn Fellowship $$$$

Under the terms of a bequest to Hamilton Community Foundation by the late Eugene B. Eastburn, a two-year Fellowship will be awarded for full-time postdoctoral studies in engineering or sciences (Natural or Physical sciences, including Health Sciences).

The fellowship will be awarded for 24 months for a total value of $90,000.

Note: The 2025 competition will be announced in late fall 2024.

Established in 2019 by a Ph.D. graduate from the Class of ’95. To be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies to full-time students enrolled in a Master’s of Science or Ph.D. program in the Faculty of Science who demonstrate excellence in academic achievement.

Fulbright Canada Student Awards $ – $$$

Traditional Fulbright Canada Student awards are intended for Canadian citizens who are graduate students, prospective graduate students, or promising young professionals who wish to study and/or conduct research in the United States. Awards may be held at any university, research centre, think tank, or government agency in the United States.

GSA Travel Award $

The GSA Travel Assistance Grants are funded from the proceeds of the Graduate Students Association Development Fund, which receives contributions from graduate students and the University. The GSA Travel Assistance Grants fund is administered through the School of Graduate Studies. The GSA Travel Assistance Grants are designed to enable graduate students to travel to undertake research or present at conferences relevant to their field of study. There are a fluctuating number of awards available each semester.

The successful recipients will be determined randomly by selecting one recipient from each faculty (Health Sciences, Engineering, Science, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business) and the balance of the awards left in a given period will be randomly selected from a list of the remaining applicants from all faculties combined.

H.G. Hilton Master’s Scholarship $$

The H.G. Hilton Master’s Scholarships were established by the income from a bequest in the estate of Hugh G. Hilton, at one time Chief Executive Officer of Stelco and member of the McMaster Board of Governors support a Master’s scholarship. The scholarship is tenable for one year, and is awarded annually to incoming Canadian citizens, permanent residents or, international students from departments which offer full-time Master’s graduate studies. Priority will be given to students intending research in Canadian industry or industrial problems. Other things being equal, preference will be given to deserving children of employees or former employees of Stelco Ltd.

The Harvey E. Longboat Graduate Scholarship for First Nation, Inuit, and Métis Students was established in 2009 in honour of Harvey E. Longboat, and in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to McMaster University and to the broader community. Established in honour of McMaster Faculty of Engineering PhD students Iman Aghabali and Mehdi Eshaghian, and a former Faculty of Health Science Post-Doctoral Fellow, who lost their lives on the downing of Ukrainian International Airlines Flight PS752. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowships

John Charles Polanyi Prize $$$

Mackenzie King Memorial Scholarships $$-$$$

The Mackenzie King Scholarships were established as an independent charitable trust under the will of the late Rt. Hon. William Mackenzie King (1874-1950).

Manulife Life Lessons Scholarship Program $$

Manulife has introduced the first Life Lessons Scholarship Program in Canada, for students who’ve experienced the death of a parent or guardian with little to no life insurance. Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme $$$$

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) aims to help increase the number of women in the nuclear field, supporting an inclusive workforce of both men and women who contribute to and drive global scientific and technological innovation.

McMaster Graduate General Bursary $

What is a bursary.

A bursary is based solely on financial need. In most cases, information from your OSAP application is used to determine your financial need (some students who don’t receive OSAP can still apply for a bursary).

The McMaster Graduate General Bursary Program application opens mid-August in AwardSpring. Funding is paid out in mid-February.

Who can apply?

Graduate students who demonstrate financial need can apply for the McMaster Graduate General Bursary Program.

Please note: The McMaster Graduate General Bursary Program is not open to international students enrolled in graduate studies, MBA, medicine or physician assistant programs.

McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) Postdoctoral Fellowship $$$$

Prospective postdoctoral fellows are invited to submit a research plan that focuses on interdisciplinary, impact-driven approaches in the study of optimal aging through one or more of the following research areas:

  • the impact of exercise on mobility;
  • the interrelationship between psychological function and social function;
  • causes and consequences of multimorbidity, frailty, and polypharmacy;
  • the role of caregiving, equity, economics and transportation in optimal aging;
  • the understanding of the biological mechanisms of diseases of aging;
  • evaluating approaches to knowledge translation to improve optimal aging; and
  • the use of technology to promote optimal aging and aging in place.

The applicant and principal supervisor are expected to involve at least two other researchers from two different McMaster faculties (outside of the principal supervisor’s faculty) as mentors in the development of an interdisciplinary research plan.

MIRA and Labarge Scholarships in Aging Research $$$

The MIRA and Labarge Scholarship program offers awards at the master’s and PhD level in two distinct streams. The Labarge Mobility Scholarship supports applicants whose research on aging includes a focus on mobility. The MIRA Scholarship in Aging Research supports interdisciplinary aging research in one of MIRA’s identified areas of focus.

The scholarships are open to master’s students beginning a new McMaster graduate degree in the 2022/2023 school year and PhD students entering year one or two of their studies. Interested candidates must develop and submit a research proposal in collaboration with a MIRA supervisor and an interdisciplinary mentor from outside the primary supervisor’s Faculty. MIRA requires confirmation that the supervisor and/or program will commit to matching the minimum level of support for the recipient for the duration of the graduate degree. MIRA Graduate Student Travel Awards $

The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging funds up to 10 graduate student travel awards per year – five in each round – valued at $500 each for students working with MIRA researchers.  Graduate students travelling to an academic conference to present an accepted abstract in aging research are eligible for up to $500 in travel funding.

Molson C. Cain Graduate Award $

Established in 2018 by the Estate of Molson C. Cain. To provide funding for a research grant for a MSc or PhD student in the Faculty of Science to be used for meetings, publications or equipment in support of their thesis. Funding to be available for the duration of the student’s nominal degree.

MURA Academic Scholarship

Established in 2020 the McMaster University Retirees Association (MURA). To be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies to a graduate student researching technological advances related to seniors, and who demonstrates academic excellence.

NSERC Doctoral scholarships $$$-$$$$

Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGS D) and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships – Doctoral (PGS D) programs provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in eligible doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields. There is a single application and review process for the CGS D and the PGS D programs. The top-ranked applicants are awarded the CGS D (tenable only in Canada) and highly ranked applicants in the next tier are awarded the PGS D (tenable in Canada and abroad).

Both programs are administered through a single application.

NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship $$$$

The NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF) program provides support to a core of the most promising researchers at a pivotal time in their careers. The fellowships are also intended to secure a supply of highly qualified Canadians with leading-edge scientific and research skills for Canadian industry, government and academic institutions.

OGS for Indigenous Graduate Students $$$

Two OGS-I scholarships are awarded to Indigenous graduate students at McMaster University who face significant financial hardship, with particular priority given to women with family responsibilities.

This criteria has been established in consultation with the Indigenous Education Council (IEC) and is adjudicated by a committee chaired through the Indigenous Studies Program.

Ontario Graduate Fellowships $$$

Ontario Graduate Fellowships (OGF) provide funding to full-time students in graduate studies at the masters and doctoral level. It’s a merit-based scholarship for students with an A- or above.

Value: $12,000 ($4,000 per term)

Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) $$$

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) programs provide funding to full-time students at the master’s and doctoral levels. They are merit-based scholarships for students with an A- or above average.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship – International $$$

Rainbow Fund $

To be granted to graduate students enrolled in any program who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ students and demonstrate financial need.

This fellow is awarded to female students who are citizens of a developing country or emerging economy. Applicants should be preparing for doctoral or postdoctoral research in the in the physical sciences, engineering, technology and related disciplines.

Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada Graduate Student Award of Merit $$

At least three awards, each in the amount of $4000, will be awarded annually to the women graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the university or general community while maintaining exemplary academic records.

Women registered in master’s or PhD programs within a designated region. Regions and number of awards rotate each year. SWAAC has designated Ontario as the region for this 2023 competition. There are five awards available for this competition. Each university may nominate one person for the award.

The Barkleys of Avonmore Scholarship $

The Barkley’s of Avonmore Scholarship was established in 1977 through the generosity of Fred Barkley to assist a student from a developing country to pursue advanced studies at McMaster University.  Each year the Dean of Graduate Studies will identify a worthy graduate student from one of the developing countries to receive the award.

The Cecil and Yvette Yip Graduate Bursaries $$

The Cecil and Yvette Yip Graduate Bursaries were established in 2003 by Dr. Cecil Yip (Class of 1959) and Mrs. Yvette Yip to recognize and encourage graduate students whose innovative work in the physical sciences and engineering crosses formal disciplinary boundaries. Preference will be given to students in any graduate program in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering, whose thesis research demonstrates excellence in integrating engineering science within the study of biology. The students must also demonstrate financial need to be eligible. A variable number of bursaries are to be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies.

The CHEPA Doctoral Research Scholarship $

Established in 2022 by David Feeny and George Torrance, founding members of the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis (CHEPA). To be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies to doctoral students enrolled in any program, who are conducting research under the supervision of faculty members belonging to CHEPA and who demonstrate academic and research excellence. The scholarship will support PhD students who have successfully completed their comprehensive examinations. Preference will be given to students with research interests that include health-related quality of life, health technology assessment, health economics, health services research, health policy or determinants of health.

The Dr. Colin Webber Graduate Scholarship $$

Established in 2013 to honour the memory of Dr. Colin Webber, McMaster University professor, physicist, radiation safety expert, teacher, mentor, and leader in the field of bone research. To be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies to master’s or doctoral students. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate interest in bone research.

Value: Minimum $1,600

The Edna Howard Bursary $

Established in 2022 by the family of Edna Howard, this bursary honours the support Edna offered graduate students through her work as a cook at The Phoenix Bar and Grill, owned and operated by the Graduate Students Association. Her food warmed the hearts of the McMaster campus community for many years until her retirement. To be granted by the School of Graduate Studies to full-time students in any program who demonstrate financial need.

The Graduate Students Association Bursary $

The Graduate Students Association Bursary was established in 1999 by the Graduate Students Association at McMaster University under the McMaster Student Opportunity Fund initiative. To be granted to a full-time or part-time graduate student in one of the following faculties: Engineering, Health Sciences, and Humanities, Science, Social Sciences, or the PhD program in Business. The bursary will be awarded annually by the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Graduate Students Association.

The H. Vincent Elliott Memorial Travel Bursary $

The H.Vincent Elliott Memorial Travel Bursary was established in 2010 by Dr. Susan J.Elliott (MA `97 and PhD`92), esteemed former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, professor of Geography and Earth Sciences, and senior research fellow at the United Nations Institute on Water (UNU-IWEH), Environment and Health, in memory of her father, H.Vincent Elliott. To be granted by the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation on the program director of ‘Water Without Borders’ to students registered in a Master’s or PhD program will be given to students in financial need.

The Howard P. Whidden Graduate Scholarship $$

The Howard P. Whidden Graduate Scholarship was established in 1987, and is open to non-Canadian students from countries of the British Commonwealth. This prestigious award is open to students who qualify for admission into any graduate program that extends to the doctorate, although the student’s initial registration may be at the Master’s level. The award is once renewable contingent upon satisfactory academic performance. It will be awarded at the discretion of the School of Graduate Studies.

The James F. Harvey and Helen S. Harvey Travel Scholarships $

Established in 1995 with funds from the estate of Helen S. Harvey.  James F. Harvey was a member of the first McMaster graduating class in Hamilton in 1935.  This travel scholarship will enable students to engage in research requiring travel.  To be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies to graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence.

The John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport Bursary $

The John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport Bursary was established in 1997 by The John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. To be granted to graduate students in the faculties of Business, Engineering, Science or Social Science who demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to graduate students who are conducting research related to commercial transportation issues and policy, specifically the role of transportation in stimulating regional economic development and trade.

The Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada Graduate Award

Established in 2022 by the Lambda Scholarship Foundation Canada. To be awarded by the School of Graduate Studies to a graduate student who is currently enrolled in their first year of any program who identifies as a member of the queer, trans community and is Black, racialized, or Indigenous.

The Lorne F. Lambier, Q.C., Scholarship $

The Lorne F. Lambier, QC Scholarship was established in 1984. The scholarship is tenable for one year. The scholarship is awarded annually to current Canadian citizens, permanent residents or international students registered in a master’s or doctoral graduate program in Faculties of Health Science and Science whose research is directed toward the understanding and/or cure of cancer.

The Mary and Harold Waterman Graduate Science Bursary $

Established in 2019 by Mary (Class of ’48) and Dr. Harold Waterman (Class of ’48 & ’49). To be granted to a graduate student enrolled in the Faculty of Science who demonstrates financial need.

The Myra Baillie Academic Grant $

Established in 2005 by the Surgical Associates in memory of Myra Baillie. To be granted to a graduate student in any degree program who attains and “A” average and demonstrates financial need. Preference will be given to a female graduate student.

The Richard Fuller Memorial Scholarships for Science $$$

The Richard Fuller Memorial Scholarships for Science were established in 1991 with funds from the estate of Henrietta Osborne. The scholarships are renewable up to three years, provided performance in graduate studies is maintained at a high academic level. These scholarships will be awarded annually to incoming or, current Canadian citizens, permanent residents or, international students registered in a master’s and doctoral graduate programs in the Faculty of Science demonstrating high academic achievement.

The School of Graduate Studies Grant in Aid for Research Travel $-$$

The SGS Grant is intended to be a grant in aid of research; students should not expect the grants to cover the full cost of travel or field work.

The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Grant is not intended for conference or course work travel .

It is not meant to replace sources of funding already available from the tri-agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC), other external granting sources, or internal scholarships and bursaries.

It is not intended to fund the research itself, but the travel to do the research.

Application Date

The application will open in Mosaic on January 8, 2024, and close on March 8, 2024.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral $$$$

The Vanier CGS program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. Vanier Scholars demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.

It is valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies.

Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents of Canada, and foreign citizens are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Wilson Leadership Scholar Award $$-$$$

The Wilson Leader Scholarship Award for graduate students is different. Valued at $12,000 in direct funding and up to $2,000 for experiential funding, it’s a leadership development and career launcher program that builds on your studies. It involves about 15 hours/month, including time for synchronous group events between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET.

Awarded to up to three graduate students annually.

Yates Scholarship $

The Yates Scholarship Fund (up to $500) was established in 1963 by the bequest of William Henry Yates. This fund support upper-level doctoral students with research activities and conference travel when a paper is being delivered. Applicants must have completed their comprehensive exam.

Medical Physics

The Division has active research in applications of Virtual Reality in medical imaging, radiation therapy planning and delivery, ablative radiation therapy, and novel strategies in magnetic resonance imaging. Current Fellow(s)

Dr. Ghada Aldosary is a clinical medical physics fellow within the Division of Medical Physics at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre. She received her M.Sc. in Medical Physics from McGill University and her Ph.D. from Carleton University. She completed her clinical residency at McGill University Health Centre and holds certification in radiation oncology physics from the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine.

Dr. Aldosary’s clinical interests include hypofrationated breast radiotherapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy, magnetic resonance imaging-guided radiotherapy, high-dose rate brachytherapy, 3D printed radiotherapy applications, workflow process optimization, data management, and quality improvement in radiation oncology.

Dr. Aldosary is passionate about healthcare equity. She is interested in mentorship, as well as equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. She serves on several committees in the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

Residency Program

Clinical residency in radiation oncology physics.

The goal of the 2-year CAMPEP accredited residency program at The Ottawa Hospital is for residents to be prepared to work in a clinical setting upon completion of the program and to prepare candidates for certification by the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM). The residency program is supported in part by Ontario Health – Cancer Care Ontario, which supports a number of post-graduate positions in clinical physics within the province, aimed at providing a solid foundation in medical physics applied to radiation oncology. The Ottawa Hospital Radiation Oncology Physics Residency Program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) since 2007. In a typical year, the residency program has three residents enrolled. Residents will complete a series of clinical rotations and will participate in a range of clinical activities within the radiation medicine program, all of which emphasize hands-on, clinical experience. Residents are expected to complete a research project during their 2-year program and will have numerous teaching opportunities.

Qualifications and Basis of Award

Admission requirements to The Ottawa Hospital program are as described by CAMPEP on its website, and the preferred entry requirement is a Ph.D. degree in medical physics from a CAMPEP-accredited graduate or certificate program .  In accordance with Canadian Employment and Immigration requirements, preference is given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. Residency positions are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and the potential for a professional career as a clinical medical physicist. Residency candidates should have good verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated research ability and a strong interest in working with a multi-disciplinary medical team.

Duration and Stipend

Program duration is two years.  As these are unionized positions ( PIPSC Ontario Medical Physicists ), salary, benefits and other employment conditions are stipulated by the collective agreement.

Medical Physicists are highly trained health-care professionals who apply physics skills and training to medicine and health care. Most medical physicists in Canada work in radiotherapy or diagnostic imaging departments in hospitals and cancer clinics. Medical physicists work in radiation therapy, both through the use of external beams and brachytherapy and in imaging with x-rays, ultrasound, PET, SPECT and MRI.

The profession requires both a strong background in physics and an understanding of human anatomy and physiology. More information on the profession can be found at the website of the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP) .

Medical Physicists must be professionally accredited. Proven competence in Medical Physics is generally established through the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) .

Graduate Programs in Medical Physics

The Medical Physics program within the Department of Physics and Astronomy was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc. ( CAMPEP ) in December 2003. Students who wish to obtain an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Medical Physics are required to register for the courses listed below. The goals of the medical physics programs are:

  • to provide academic training for medical physicists, a profession that is expanding rapidly in Canada and internationally.
  • to develop appropriate research skills and experience within the community of medical physicists and clinical practitioners in the Province of British Columbia to enable them to contribute to the development of advanced medical techniques. This rationale is supported by the access to fore-front technology in medical infrastructure in the Positron Emission Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Radiation Therapy research groups.
  • to develop and maintain trans-disciplinary research projects between investigators in the Faculties of Science, Medicine, Applied Science (i.e. Engineering) and Arts (Psychology), which take advantage of leading-edge research capabilities at the local teaching hospitals.

Master of Science in Medical Physics

A CAMPEP-accredited Master of Science in Medical Physics is offered in our department. The prerequisite for the program is a B.Sc. in physics (single or combined), astronomy, or mathematics; or a B.A.Sc. in engineering physics or electrical engineering. An overall average of 'A-' or better in third and fourth year courses is expected for entry into the program. The M.Sc. in Medical Physics requires a minimum of 38 credits with the research thesis, Physics 549, counting 12 credits.  The required core courses and one elective below yield 26 credits.

The required core courses of the Medical Physics program include Quantum Mechanics I (PHYS 500), Radiotherapy Physics I (PHYS 534), Radiotherapy Physics II (PHYS 535), Advanced Radiation Biophysics (PHYS 536), Radiation Dosimetry (PHYS 539), Image Reconstruction (PHYS 540), and Anatomy, Physiology and Statistics for Medical Physicists (PHYS 545) and Clinical Experience in Medical Physics (PHYS 546). There is one elective which should be chosen from Nuclear Medicine (PHYS 541), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PHYS 542), and Biomedical Optics (PHYS 543). Students will also be required to accumulate a number of days of specified clinical experience and to participate in our medical physics seminar series.

Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Physics

The CAMPEP-accredited Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Physics can be obtained by passing the courses as required for the M.Sc. in Medical Physic and pursuing a research topic in the field of Medical Physics. These courses can either be passed prior to enrolling in the Ph.D. program as part of an M.Sc. in Medical Physics or during the Ph.D. program.

M.Sc. Program

The M.Sc. program in medical physics is a two-year CAMPEP-accredited program . The first 5-year accreditation was achieved in 1993, latest reaccreditation was awarded in 2018 - full accreditation is now valid through December 31, 2024. The portfolio for CAMPEP reaccreditation is currently pending a Site Visit to the Medical Physics Unit in Fall 2024.

Students take 11 mandatory medical physics courses (27 credits) during the first year of studies and work on their M.Sc. thesis (18 credits) during the second year of studies under the supervision of an MPU faculty member.

The prerequisite for admission to the M.Sc. program in medical physics is a B.Sc. degree in physics (honors or major) or equivalent, with an undergraduate studies GPA of 3.00 or more. Admission into the MSc program is a competitive process involving a review of all applications by a selection committee following the application deadline. The top-ranked students will be accepted into the program according to program capacity. Typically, the program admits about 10 students per year. The current M.Sc. thesis program is structured such that, in addition to the basics of medical physics, the students get some practical knowledge through mandatory laboratory work in radiation oncology, radiology, and nuclear medicine. The students are also given some research training through their thesis work on a medical physics topic. Thus, the program gives students the basic theoretical and practical knowledge of medical physics required to enable them to either enter the job market in clinical physics at an M.Sc. level or continue their studies toward a Ph.D. degree in medical physics. The continuation toward a Ph.D. is recommended only to students who excel during their M.Sc. studies in medical physics.

All courses are mandatory, although in exceptional cases, a student can be exempted from a course (except for the four "core" courses - see below) on the strength of an equivalent graduate course taken elsewhere.

Program overview.

Doctoral students in Physics and Astronomy have the opportunity to make original and significant contributions to science within a department recognized globally for leading research. The PhD program appeals to students planning a career in academia, government labs, leadership roles, and industry. The programs connects students with state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities both here and at collaborating institutions, and with world-renowned researchers in one of six focus areas: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Complexity, Environmental and Isotope Physics, Radiation Oncology Physics, Quantum Information and Quantum, Atomic, and Molecular Optics, and Space Physics. These focus areas lie within program specializations that students apply to: Physics, Astrophysics, Space Physics or Radiation Oncology Physics (including Medical Imaging/Medical Physics).

The PhD under Radiation Oncology Physics (ROP) is a Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Program (CAMPEP) accredited program. Students interested in this specialization typically have a MSc from a CAMPEP accredited program or closely related degree to be admitted. The PhD specializing in ROP is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) and provides didactic background, research experience and clinical training for a career in Radiation Oncology Physics. The majority of our graduates have gone on to residencies in Clinical Radiation Oncology Physics in Canada and beyond.

The department's per capita funding level is the highest within UCalgary's Faculty of Science. Admission is competitive, favouring students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership.

Completing this program

Astronomy & Astrophysics: Research topics may include radio, optical, infrared and space astronomy, computational astrophysics, star formation, the interstellar medium, and general relativity.

Isotope and Environmental Physics:  Research topics may include nuclear decay processes, the effect of human activity on the environment, the development of analytical and instrumental techniques, isotope composition of trace gases and aerosols, source apportionment studies, and isotope fractionation.

Radiation Oncology Physics:  Research topics may include intensity modulated and image guided radiation therapy, prostate brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery.

Space Physics:  Research topics may include precipitation mechanisms, remote sensing magnetospheric dynamics, and the solar-terrestrial interaction.

Complexity: Research topics may include complex networks, self-organized criticality, statistical and computational physics, and non-linear dynamics.

Quantum Information and Quantum, Atomic, and Molecular Optics:  Research topics may include the study of information, communication and computation using devices that are governed by quantum principle as well as the interaction between light and matter.

Candidacy: Students will prepare a thesis proposal as well as take an oral exam on background knowledge of the research topic and the student's proposal.

Thesis:  Students will be required to submit and defend an original research thesis.

Researcher, technician, radiation oncology, medical or clinical physicist, professor, instructor, data science/mining, communications, journalism, entrepreneur, environmental, financial, strategic management and/or IT consultant, quantitative analyst, risk assessment, insurance, bioinformatics.

A PhD in physics and astronomy is usually considered a final degree; in some cases, students may pursue postdoctoral work.

Students are required to prepare a thesis and successfully defend in an open oral defense.

A minimum of 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.

Minimum education

An MSc degree (or equivalent) in physics, engineering physics, astronomy/astrophysics or a related scientific field.

English language proficiency (ELP)

An applicant whose primary language is not English may fulfill the English language proficiency requirement in one of the following ways:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iB T including TOEFL iBT Home Edition)  minimum score of 86 (Internet-based, with no section less than 20).
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)  score of 6.5 (with no section less than 6.0).
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced or Cambridge C2 Proficiency  minimum score of 180.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE)   score of 59 or higher
  • Canadian Academic English Language test (CAEL)  overall score of 70 (no section less than 60).
  • Academic Communication Certificate (ACC)  minimum of B+ in each course.
  • Duolingo English Test  obtaining a minimum score of 125 (with no sub-score below 105).

Welcome to the Medical Physics Program at Johns Hopkins

What is Medical Physics?

Medical physics is a field that applies the principles and methods of physics to the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases, particularly in the area of radiology and radiation therapy. As an essential part of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science and Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Medical Physics Education Program is dedicated to advancing research innovation and education training in line with the Hopkins' tripartite mission .

A Joint Medical Physics Program

Our joint education program includes  teams of faculties from the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science and the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences. We offer a PhD program, a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics residency program and a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics master's program , and we actively participate in other training programs. Our clinical and research programs provide an excellent training environment including state-of-the-art facilities for our medical physics residents, postdoctoral fellows, and students to become leaders in medical physics. Research and Development

In  research , we focus on solving clinically impactful problems through interdisciplinary studies. Our team closely collaborates with investigators in basic science, engineering, and medicine to develop novel solutions and translate discoveries and technical advances into clinical practice. Our research areas include the incorporation of imaging into high-value precision medicine including Research Labs and Center in Radiology , advanced image guidance, anatomically and functionally-based adaptive radiation therapy, brachytherapy and radionuclide therapy, artificial intelligence, and novel therapeutic strategies such as proton therapy. We develop cutting-edge medical imaging techniques and tools that enhance diagnostic accuracy, optimize treatment planning, and improve patient outcomes. We work with our colleagues in the  Molecular Radiation Sciences Division  to study radiobiology mechanisms, such as in FLASH therapy, and develop technologies to advance pre-clinical radiation investigations. We also aim to improve global healthcare and enhance radiotherapy in resource-limited settings.

Clinical Training Opportunity

In our education program, we provide training and observation opportunities in the routine clinical services of radiology and radiotherapy at various Hopkins locations, where we are responsible for the technical aspects of modern radiology and radiotherapy, including radiopharmaceutical therapy , quality assurance of diagnostic imaging devices, image-guided radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy, adaptive radiotherapy,  proton therapy ,  brachytherapy , and  radionuclide therapy . Medical physicists are health care professionals with specialized training in the medical applications of physics. Their work often involves the use of x-rays and accelerated charged particles, radioactive substances, ultrasound, magnetic and electric fields, infra-red and ultraviolet light, heat and lasers in diagnosis and therapy. Most medical physicists work in hospital diagnostic imaging departments, cancer treatment facilities, or hospital-based research establishments. Others work in universities, government, and industry.

Graduates of the M.Sc. in Medical Physics program will:

  • understand the physics of medical imaging and radiation oncology;
  • be able to apply medical physics theory to frontier research;
  • work effectively in clinical and research environments that include oncologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, cardiologists, neuroscientists, radiation therapy professionals and biomedical engineers;

What makes the program unique?

The program benefits from research strengths within the Vancouver area medical physics community, e.g. radiation therapy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear medicine imaging (PET and SPECT) for brain, cardiac and cancer imaging, and high energy nuclear physics.

Research conducted within the program can directly contribute to provincial heath care initiatives through engagement of associate and adjunct faculty based in local health care institutions.

Both the MSc and PhD medical physicist are eligible to sit the Canadian College of Physicist in Medicine exam which awards the credential for clinical practice.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). The graduate program that you are applying to may have additional requirements. Please review the specific requirements for applicants with credentials from institutions in:

English Language Test

Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application.

All applicants have to submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study. Document submission requirements depend on whether your institution of study is within Canada or outside of Canada.

Letters of Reference

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Many programs require a statement of interest , sometimes called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar.

Financial Support

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

Career Options

Graduates will be equipped to pursue careers in hospitals, specialized areas of medicine (e.g. cancer treatment and research and brain research), government, industry and other medical research environments. Their work is interdisciplinary in nature and in many cases, translates to innovative solutions to real world medical problems relating to diagnosis and treatment of many disease types from cancer to brain and cardiac research.

Many of our medical physics faculty hold associate or adjunct professor status in the Department of Physics and Astronomy but have primary appointments in Departments of the Faculty of Medicine (Radiology, Surgery, Oncology) or work at the BC Cancer Agency Treatment or Research Centres.

In BC alone, population growth and replacement of retirements requires about 5 new radiotherapy physicists each year.  Growing demand for advanced medical imaging (CT, MRI, PET) creates a similar requirement for imaging physicists.
