When I first began work on this seminal feminist filmmaker 45 years ago almost all of her critical theoretical writing and all but two of her films were inaccessible. Germaine Dulac is among the most important figures of French silent cinema, even world cinema tout court. A pioneer of cinema, Germaine Dulac (1882-1942)  is one of the major figures of the 1920s French Avant-Garde. Hugely influential, she founded and directed numerous organisations and, in parallel, was a tireless activist in the defense of women’s rights.

In her films, Dulac explored new possiblities of expression in cinema. She directed over twenty films starting in 1916. Among her notable films are  La Souriante Mme Beudet  (1923) and  La Coquille et le Clergyman  ( The Seashell and the Clergyman , 1927), from a scenario by Antonin Artaud. Writings on Cinema  presents another side of her multi-faceted career as filmmaker and feminist: Dulac as writer, theoretician, and public speaker. The book brings together her principal texts, interviews, and speeches, where, in her passionate style, Dulac presents her concept of cinema. She argues for a cinema of liberation, of unbounded creativity, striving to define the inate qualities of the new art form around a key concept of the French avant-garde: cinema as motion. She addresses the major issues of the era such as the coming of sound and color, film as an educational tool, and, above all, how the cinematic image is a reflection of the modern age. This reflection on the concept of representation, an in-depth exploration of the cinematic theories of the 1920s, has lost none of its force and relevance today as new technologies and approaches to image-making emerge.

1 One singular thing about experimental cinema is that it cannot be reduced to the simple making of films. Its filmmakers are often its most fervent advocates, through a whole range of activities that go from criticism to programming via publishing and teaching. One of the characteristics of this milieu is that it is constantly redefining itself in accordance with the artistic and social context in which it operates. The accessibility and visibility of the works constituting this field are therefore decisive. Three new books illustrate the different approaches to this practice, from the viewpoints, respectively, of the filmmakers, the works and the theory.

2 Two of them are from Editions Paris expérimental, a publishing house set up by the filmmaker Christian Lebrat in the 1980s. The first comprises three interviews, and celebrates the process he inaugurated at a time when publications of critical texts or texts by filmmakers were a rarity in France. It looks back over and celebrates the adventures of this publishing house founded by Lebrat twenty years ago. It also includes a set of documents and summaries of events and publications organised by Paris expérimental. It shows the publisher’s commitment and perse­verance in its project of publishing classic and contemporary texts in this field. The book by Patrick de Haas is an expanded edition of an article he published in 1989 in Andy Warhol, cinéma , entitled “Vider la vue” (Emptying Sight). 1 In this essay, de Haas analyses the complex relation of Andy Warhol’s work to the cinema, whatever the medium he was using. He judiciously observes that cinema “is a principle which under­lines the fact that, from now on, a thing, an event or a human being exists only through the image.” The article concentrates on Warhol’s filmmaking, with its vision of movies, in the artist’s own words, as “mental Braille.” 2 It is on the surface that Warhol’s films are seen and read, and this emphasis on surface is accompanied by a proliferation of images in series, which in turn are understood as repetition. This repetition underscores every difference, from one frame to the next, from one star to another. The films accumulate just like the silkscreens, and the interpretation machine works overtime. This proliferation of images is such that it is not possible to deal here with sissyhood, camp, or homosexuality, which inform cinema in a different way.

3 François Albera’s book sets out to consider avant-garde cinema in relation to its conditions of possibility, that is to say, in accordance with its appearance and its grounding in modernity. What is cinema’s relation to the avant-garde? How has our understanding of the avant-garde in cinema moved away from the political and social foundation that it had in other artistic fields? Thus, the question of the avant-garde in cinema is compounded by that of the actual existence of avant-garde cinema. These considerations apply to the situation of the avant-gardes as much as to French avant-garde cinema. Once the question has been raised in these historically justified terms, the practice of experimental cinema, as it emerged in the United States in the 1940s, going on to become the New American Cinema and underground cinema of the 1950s and 1960s, will be, so to speak, disqualified. The debates over the notion of the amateur that animated the world of cinema in the US are very useful when it comes to looking at the articulation of experimentation and militantism. 3 This notion does not meet the criteria favoured by Albera, which correspond to a practice that is, by its heritage, grounded in debates over the articulation of the definition of an avant-garde movement in France.  Frequently reiterates the separation between the avant-garde and politics that was transcended by the Lettristes and renewed by Situationism, whose influence on the films of Jean-Luc Godard he rightly insists on. “Whatever the number of films that might seem fit for inclusion in the experimental or avant-garde corpus, the avant-garde position is, precisely, not to accept exclusion or marginalisation, not to accept being placed in the underground, unless with a view to escaping it, not to rest content with small numbers or to assert an ultra-artisticness, or to place one’s subversiveness on the level of form.”(p. 10)

4 This book by Albera revisits some of the arguments put forward by Peter Wollen on the existence and relations of two avant-gardes 4 and by Guy Hennebelle and Raphaël Bassan in their special publication on avant-garde cinema, 5 but within his own rigorous historical research. This transversal approach brings a new energy to this field of study and puts its finger on a theoretical haziness regarding the understanding of avant-garde cinema. Albera sets out to resituate the bases of the debate, and in doing so challenges a number of beliefs. In a word, he introduces a bit of movement and fresh air into a field that has tended to cling to its historic interpretations. Readers may however regret that he makes hardly any references to the filmmakers’ cooperatives of the 1970s, or to the laboratory movement of the 1990s, in relation to experimental cinema. When it comes to considering contemporary cinema, the historical approach is lagging behind.

Festival des Cinémas Différents et Expérimentaux de Paris

23ème édition.

Ce festival est un rendez-vous annuel international organisé par le Collectif Jeune Cinéma, structure de distribution et de diffusion des pratiques expérimentales de l’image et du film.

En juin 1971, le Collectif Jeune Cinéma est fondé par des cinéastes, critiques, et programmateur.rice.s, sous l’impulsion de Marcel Mazé, et avec la bénédiction de Marguerite Duras. Dès le départ, le CJC est inséparable d’un festival, celui du Jeune Cinéma, qui se déroulait à Hyères. L’idée maîtresse du CJC était de fédérer l’énergie de ces moments de rencontre, de les perpétuer tout au long de l’année dans d’autres zones géographiques que celles des villages globaux qu’incarnaient et qu’incarnent encore les festivals. Cinquante ans après, le CJC est toujours actif, toujours créateur, portant à la fois son histoire et son avenir à pleines mains. Il est toujours lié à un festival, qui a toutefois changé de nom et de localisation. Pour célébrer son jubilé, le festival consacrera de nombreux focus aux moments forts de l’histoire du CJC. La perspective est double : rafraîchir les regards grâce à un très gros travail sur les films du CJC et ses archives, et préparer les cinquante ans à venir au service des cinéastes, programmateur.ice.s, chercheur.se.s, cinéphiles, étudiant.e.s, publics, jeunes, vieux, vieilles, employé.e.s, ouvrier.e.s, paysan.ne.s, cadres…

Pierre Bressan : trajectoire

Programmation, esthétique du signal, une panoplie du hacking filmique, pré-programme sur écran led, programme (en salle), la plupart des films ne méritent que d’être démembrés pour composer d’autres œuvres, le cinéma le studio d’aubervilliers se trouve au 2 rue edouard poisson (théâtre de la commune) 93300 à aubervilliers. l’adresse figurant sur notre brochure papier est érronée., la cave : cycle de projections de films pré et post-covid, l’adresse de la cave sera communiquée après réservation., une école du corps  lithophonie, les brigades s’marti, st charles / cjc, 1998-2008, atelier de l’etna : cjc remix, films dont seront tirés ceux de l'atelier, les productions aléatoires, affinités coopérantes, soirée d’ouverture, programme #1, programme #2, les regards dévorants, hors système, absis-duras : une amitié à l’écran, films borderlight, soirée de clôture - klonaris / thomadaki : l’enfant qui a pissé des paillettes, compétitions, compétition #1, ce programme présente des films pouvant potentiellement affecter les personnes épileptiques photosensibles, ou sujettes à toute autre forme de photosensibilité., compétition #2, compétition #3, compétition #4, compétition #5, compétition #6, délibération publique du jury, reprise des films primés, jeunes publics, jeunes publics #1, ☾ libertés  ☽, à partir de 6 ans, jeunes publics #2, si vous voulez inscrire un groupe d’enfants à la séance, veuillez écrire à transmission{at}cjcinema.org., cinéastes -15 ans, séance accessible à tous publics, adultes et enfants., cinéastes 15-17,9.

Le CJC en 50 ans et deux temps

Marcel Mazé, jeune juriste et cinéphile, a attiré l’attention de Maurice Périsset, directeur du Festival International du Jeune Cinéma d’Hyères, en organisant, seul, le 23 juin 1970 au cinéma le Studio du Val de Grâce à Paris, une session de films français issue de l’édition qui venait de se dérouler lors de la manifestation varoise : Une courte histoire pour les enfants : Angélina de Pierre Bertrant-Jaume ; Jojo ne veut pas montrer ses pieds de Denis Berry et Le Socrate de Robert Lapoujade. Périsset demanda alors à Mazé de constituer un comité de présélection pour l’édition du festival d’Hyères 1971. Une activité intense naquit alors à Paris et des programmations eurent lieu presque toutes les semaines dans différents lieux. Des réunions se tenaient régulièrement à la maison de la culture de la rue Mouffetard. À la dernière d’entre elles, il a été convenu d’organiser une table ronde au festival d’Hyères pour préciser nos orientations. Certain.e.s d’entre nous étaient au comité de présélection, d’autres au jury composé par Mazé. Avec les encouragements de Marguerite Duras, lors de ce rassemblement hyérois, nous avons jeté les bases de la future coopérative qui a gardé le nom de Collectif Jeune Cinéma. Les statuts ont été signés le 12 juin 1971 chez un avocat parisien par neuf personnes qui ont élu Marcel Mazé président. Deux nuits blanches ont été organisées au cinéma l’Olympic de Frédéric Mitterand qui allait accueillir les projections du CJC jusqu’à l’été 1972. La première a eu lieu le 29 juin 1971 avec, entre autres, Jaune le soleil de Marguerite Duras et Le Château de Pointilly d’Adolfo Arrieta. La deuxième nuit blanche, consacrée, le 3 décembre 1971, à des films de Kenneth Anger, Bruce Baillie, Stan Brakhage, Peter Kubelka, Ken Jacobs, Jonas Mekas ou Michael Snow, attira une foule considérable et fut répétée le lendemain.

Aujourd'hui

Faire le tri dans tout ce qui est produit est un exercice difficile. Déjà, à Hyères et à Paris, il y a cinquante ans, dans ce creuset d’où est sorti le Collectif Jeune Cinéma, un groupe de « militant.e.s » réuni.e.s autour de Marcel Mazé, faisait le tri. Sur quels critères ? Eh bien, comme aujourd’hui : la combinaison d’expériences personnelles, de culture cinématographique apportant des concepts, des catégories et enfin d’attentes personnelles à l’égard de ce que doit être une création émancipée des déterminismes du marché. Mais qu’on le veuille ou non, il y a eu depuis cinquante ans, une évolution de la sphère du cinéma expérimental. Cela se mesure à la proportion croissante de cinéastes « faisant de l’expérimental ». Comme le peintre Renoir qui faisait de l’impressionnisme plutôt que d’être impressionniste, il y a aujourd’hui pléthore de cinéastes qui font de l’expérimental au lieu d’être expérimentaux. Or, le CJC dès le départ, s’est beaucoup plus attaché aux cinéastes expérimentaux qu’à ceux.celles qui faisaient de l’expérimental. Il faut voir derrière ces formules, peut-être alambiquées, un enjeu de taille : parvenir à discerner entre ce qui relève du geste artistique ancré dans une façon d’être au monde, une philosophie, voire même une spiritualité, et ce qui relève du désir de séduire, de s’adapter à une attente. Il n’y a pas d’âge ni de prérequis pour appartenir à la première catégorie.

On démontre cette année encore, dans les sections -15 ans et la toute première 15-17,9, que de très jeunes cinéastes en sont capables. Cette émotion exceptionnelle qu’ils apportent, nous nous sommes efforcé.e.s de la retrouver dans tous les programmes compétitifs que nous avons élaborés. C’est pourquoi depuis cinquante ans, le Collectif Jeune Cinéma, s’appelle toujours Collectif Jeune Cinéma.

Pour célébrer son jubilé, le festival consacrera de nombreux focus aux moments forts de l’histoire du CJC. La perspective est double : rafraîchir les regards grâce à un très gros travail sur nos films et nos archives, préparer les cinquante ans à venir avec de nouveaux outils au service des cinéastes, programmateur.ice.s, chercheur.euse.s, cinéphiles, étudiant.e.s, publics, jeunes, vieux, vieilles, employé.e.s, ouvrièr.e.s, paysan.ne.s, cadres…

Jean pierre ceton.

Jean Pierre Ceton est un écrivain français né en 1950. Il fait la rencontre de Marguerite Duras qui lui dédie le recueil de textes Les Yeux verts parus dans Les Cahiers du cinéma en 1980.

Entre 1975 et 1982 il réalise plusieurs courts métrages dont Dis/ cours , Narcisso-métal , J’aimais encore cette vallée ainsi que deux longs métrages : Quand je pense à Jacences et Fréquence perdue . Il se consacre ensuite à l’écriture et publie une dizaine de romans dont Rauque la ville (préface de Marguerite Duras), La Suive , La Fiction d’Emmedée , Les Voyageurs modèles , Le pont d’Algeciras , L’Insatisfaction , Nouvelles du passé , et Le Petit roman de juillet en 2020.

Autour de la fin du siècle passé, il a signé plusieurs tribunes au journal Le Monde (dont «Libérons la langue française» et «Voilà le temps venu de poser la question de l’Académie »). Présent sur les réseaux sociaux, il anime comme un grand livre sa page internet jeanpierreceton.com et dirige la revue en ligne Lettreaulecteur.com .

Élodie Imbeau

Après des études de lettres classiques et sciences sociales, Élodie Imbeau commence à travailler à la Cinémathèque française en tant que chargée de la programmation jeune public, poste qu’elle occupe depuis 2002. Au-delà de la programmation de films, elle coordonne également toute sorte d’ateliers pratiques de découverte du cinéma en direction du jeune public. Elle s’intéresse, en particulier, au pré-cinéma et a écrit en 2006, un ouvrage pour les enfants dans la collection Atelier-Cinéma (Actes Sud/ Cinémathèque française) consacré aux lanternes magiques.

Par ailleurs, elle est membre fondatrice de l’association Braquage (association de diffusion du cinéma expérimental), et productrice de clips pour le label Air Rytmo.

Lea Leïla Jiqqir

Lea Leïla Jiqqir est une artiste Franco-Marocaine, vidéaste et productrice-musicienne installée à Nancy (FR).

Semi-autodidacte, semi-diplômée des Beaux Arts de Nancy, son travail explore les méandres des identités plurielles à travers des questions de généalogie, de retour(s) aux racines… Entre l’écriture, la vidéo et le son, souvent à la limite du documentaire, Lea Leïla Jiqqir puise son inspiration dans sa propre quête d’identité, aux origines et à la géographie bien particulières. Glissant peu à peu de ces questions autobiographiques vers des préoccupations plus universelles, son travail interroge les multiples facettes des questions d’immigration, dont : la mobilité, la transmission, l’oubli, la violence qui y est liée, la déconstruction du (des) passé(s). Au prisme de l’introspection, de la poésie intimiste et de l’investigation autodidacte, le travail de Lea Leïla Jiqqir est en mutation permanente, instable, entre progression et digression.

Également musicienne et productrice, elle fait partie du duo électro psyché franco-marocain Taxi Kebab, tout en restant investie dans le domaine de l’organisation d’événements (arts visuels, musique).

Occitane Lacurie

Occitane Lacurie est membre du comité de rédaction de la revue Débordements , coréalisatrice d’un podcast sur l’image en mouvement et doctorante en études visuelles. Elle travaille sur les relations entre fantômes et technique à travers le prisme de l’archéologie des médias.

Christian Lebrat

Christian Lebrat est artiste, cinéaste et photographe. Il a réalisé une vingtaine de films, performances et installations ainsi que plusieurs vidéos. Un DVD de ses films argentiques, Vibrations , a été publié par Re:Voir. Ses films font partie de la collection du Centre Pompidou et sa vidéo V1 (Tourbillons ) des collections du FNAC (Fonds National d’Art Contemporain). Il a créé et dirige les éditions Paris Expérimental. Il est l’auteur de Cinéma radical (2008, 2ème éd. augmentée, en anglais, 2021) et co-auteur de Jeune, dure et pure ! Une histoire du cinéma d’avant-garde et expérimental en France (2001).

Call out for films and videos submissions for the upcoming 24th edition of Paris Festival for Different and Experimental Cinemas (October 2022). The festival is organised by Collectif Jeune Cinéma every year. CJC - Collectif Jeune Cinéma - was founded in 1971 following the New York Filmmakers's Cooperative footsteps. Along with the organising of regular montly screenings, CJC is also the organiser of the Paris Festival for Different and Experimental Cinéma.

• Only experimental films and videos made in 2021 - 2022
• All formats (super 8, 16mm, 35mm, digital files, dcp) and durations will be considered
• Online screening required
• Open to all gender identities
• All films in a language other than French must be subtitled in French or English
• Deadline for submission : May 26th 2022
• Online previews are mandatory
• No more than one film per filmmaker

Please note that it is essential to submit an online preview of your work (on plateform such as vimeo). We don't accept DVDs.
